What's wrong tactically?

What's wrong tactically?

I thought this when I saw the team. It's U7 football coaching level basic shite that Oxford would be compact so having zero width on the pitch until the last five, yeah nice one there Paul mate.

Durutti, 53, no badges, Higher Walton.
Yeah when you're playing Dobbin and Lang, who are better in the central areas, you want overlapping full backs to have the width when you're going to be playing against a deep, compact team.

I think he ended up going with the back four that he did to try and combat Oxford's main threat (set pieces) but they (Gibson) still got steamrolled. So it was pointless in the end. Shackled ourselves somewhat, whilst barely helping us defensively either.

We try to play out from the back but have a static midfield every game whiteman gets the ball from defence looks up and every forward and midfield is marked and just stood still so it goes back into defence….try offiah in whiteman position would help as he is capable of bringing the ball out from back but again if the midfield don’t attempt to lose their marker it won’t make a difference.
This is North End's "go to" / automatic mindset.

No movement.
No movement into fresh/different/new pace.

TBH it's been like this for game upon game upon game.

Yet again, more 'basic' tuitional skills NOT being drummed into the players.

you happy clappers would have us thinking we played Brasil last night, we played a team in the bottom 3 at home and they easily beat us, this is all down to the fucking useless manager we have.
I liked Oxfords style to be fair . Get the ball into our box by any means necessary as much as possible , force our defenders to defend and keeper to make saves. Whether that be by long throw , winning free kicks in our half and putting them into the box, or counter attacking with pace and intent , taking risks to beat a man etc .

Obviously you could see they lack quality and a decent team would easily beat them .

As the late great Bill Shankley said. ‘If ye can nae pass, ye can nae play ‘ and there’s not a player in this team that can pass the ball .. it’s so bloody obvious .. it’s the very root of the game and it looks like everyone at Deepdale has never heard of it

Set pieces are a big one for me. Balls in are poor quality and recently we can't defend them either.
We are definitely terrible at defending them. I think our deliveries are better than we often say - the issue is we have no aggression attacking the ball, so we have to try things outside the box.

Said it weeks ago on here.

The vacant gap of No Mans Land between Whiteman/McCann to Devine/Dobbin is allowing the opposition to occupy and dictate the game from here. It simply cuts off any central attacking flow hence our low goal scoring output and chance creation. (36 Games, 42 Goals). Which is why I was continually shouting out over the years for Barry Bannan. But that ship - along with Patterson - has sailed to Millwall.

Funny how ever since the last PNE player to himself occupy this position of NML and made it his own, who has since left to go back to his parent club, that results have since waned.

It is like a bloody huge pot hole in PNEs midfield, it needs filling in.

same as last season when woodman got injured, as soon as iversen went the season was over.

Cornell is fucking honking as a keeper, look at PH results when cornell isn't in nets. All will be fine once iversens back.

I don't know enough about the game and haven't been able to watch that many this season, but I would think the number games missed by the preferred starting XI (either injury, suspension, recall, sale, whatever) went over the tipping point of being successful this season with the squad depth that we have.

Its so very simple.
Most of the side couldnt pass wind.
Most of the side couldnt trap a bag of cement!!
Add to that whatever tactics you like,
You still have the recipe for a shit show!
Take that and look to play in your own half for three quarters of the match, a clusterfuck on toast!!!!

Cornell is better than Woodman , think he has done ok as number 2 , the whole team have not performed this year in general.

Playing a central midfielder who quite frankly struggles to anything other than play a sideways pass and another who only has one leg you font give your forwards any service. That and playing 4 centre halves who again give no service doesn't help

If only we had a direct comparison between the two...

Oh yeah, last season when Cornell's arrival in the side corresponded with our slide down the table.

Absolutely. And so obvious.

It takes Whiteman 4 touches to control the ball before the then looks up to see the opposition have virtually always had time to recover and nullify any movement from our attackers. F*ckin painful to watch so I’ve decided not to bother until it’s sorted.

Literally no link between defence and attack, no support for the attackers. Totally disjointed and amateurish.

I though PH, SM, Jason E and the new fitness coach was a recipe for success, there seemed a lot of early promise but it’s turned to sh*te with absolutely no sign of improvement.

Don’t even know where to start but something which is always clear is there’s nowhere near enough movement from all of our players when in possession.

They’re either way too close together to put together a move which gets them up the pitch or so spaced out that we’re forced to go long.

It kills us.

Agree on the movement and my other pet hate with the passing is that a lot of the time it is always behind the man they are passing to or where he is stood and not in the free space in front of him so when they get the ball they have to check there run and lose any momentum. My other issue is and probably not something that can be taught to most is that when a player receives a pass they always control the ball and then look up giving the opposition time to close down or mark players instead of keeping there head up and controlling it and passing it all in one moving movement
