He played more progressive passes last night than McCann has done his whole PNE career.

Won more tackles too, the thing McCann is supposed to be good at

PNE’s fascination with giving the captain dogs abuse for not being Sean Gregan is so weird.

Whiteman brings our densest fans out of the woodwork. People have routinely brought up the fact that he’s statistically one of the most progressive DM’s in the division, but you’ll just get ‘I don’t care about stats, he just passes sideways and backwards’

Whiteman and McCann are as bad as each other and that’s where the problem lies. Not an ounce of creativity.

Whiteman had a great assist last game, McCann has 0 championship assists (excluding against Sheffield Wednesday, a L2 calibre team) in 100+ games, despite playing slightly further forward for a lot of those games.

I don’t think they’d be a bad pairing in a 4-2-3-1, kind of like a BTEC Pearson and Gally. But I’d agree, starting both is pretty limiting in a back 5

Think Whiteman and McCann needed some help in there last night.
Don't like it when we go two up top with one behind (or one up top with two behind) - it feels too top heavy.
Add in the fact we have wingbacks who can't get up and down the field for any longer than 10 minutes and by default you end up with a flat back five, three at the top end, and Whiteman and McCann getting overrun in the middle of the park.
Devine and Dobbin are unquestionably our two best players, and at times link up really well together. I'm just not sure we can always afford to have them on the field at the same time.
This is why the fact we've just (for us) heavily invested in two players who operate in similar areas blows my mind a little.
Having lost two central midfielders without replacing in January means we are now very light in that area while overmanned in the AM area...so I don't see it changing for the remainder of the season.

Your eyes don’t lie to you

I can’t believe McCann is avoiding scrutiny, he is a shit Ben Whiteman. The main difference between first half of the season and now is, Whiteman passes the ball to Armstrong and he progresses the ball forward. Whiteman passes the ball to McCann, he passes it back to him.

We need to play with either McCann or Whiteman, not both.

But let's not kid ourselves about Whiteman. He was dropped last season because he simply wasn't good enough and its an 18 year old kid who's made him look good this season. We can't afford to shell out 5 million on someone who possesses the skills to make him look good, so we may as well get rid whilst there may still be some value in him and change our style altogether, because what we're doing isn't working.

Yep, and the one that gets the nod is Whiteman. Unfortunately we can only use what we’ve got. Come next season would hope to have a completely different midfield.

I’d play whiteman with Devine and then play Moran in the Devine role. Would leave us a little more powder puff in the middle but would give us an extra player who’s comfortable on the ball

Really? Don Goodman didn't see it that way. On the hour mark he was critiquing the play as being way too safe and what happened at that exact point? Whiteman turned sideways to McCann who turned sideways to Storey who went backwards to Cornell......zzzzzzzzz.

The tactics were awful second half, incredibly disappointing to watch.

The only forward passes I saw after 20 minutes were just punts round the side that went out for throw ins and goal kicks.

With whiteman I don’t think the issue is forward passing he can do that it’s how long he takes on the ball. The sideways and backwards thing is played on a bit because with no players trying to create angles and demand the ball then what else can you do. However, whiteman wants the game played at a very slow pace and it kills all our momentum
