He's not helped by the back 3 whose passing forces his first touch to be on the turn. Storey is particularly bad at this. I've lost count of the amount of times he passes to the RWB and the ball is behind them. Forces the WB to collect the ball facing his own goal and allows the opposition to close down quickly.
Post .
I don't know why McCall can't see this.
Any prospect of an attack is smothered instantly.

FYet he manages to be better than most of the division at it. Odd.
I note there's no pie chart section for successful forward passes .
That's passes at the right speed , correct accuracy + right speed & correct accuracy.

But it still "progresses the ball" even if it's inaccurate or too hard or too soft.

Yeah I know our pitch is shit but we play half our games elsewhere.

Unless @Heck Tuah is using a dodgy site, that’s because they’re all successful passes. A “progressive pass” is literally a completed pass to a teammate closer to the opposition box than the person playing the pass

Otherwise they’d be “clearances”

Certainly helps support my feeling that McCann is the reason we create jack diddly squat.

He should be screening a back 4. Tackle and give it short.

I don't think Whiteman's passing is exceptional enough to play every single game as that play-making anchor, so at home I'd rather see McCann deep, with Devine & Moran/ Whiteman/ Thompson as two 8's ahead of him.

Just do something fucking different. At home at least.

Offiah - Storey - Gibson - Vukcevic
----------McCann-------------
-------Moran - Devine---------
---Dobbin - --------Lang------
----------Osmajic-------------

I'm not a massive Whiteman fan, but he's had a good season until the last few games - far better than last term (when he looked finished, physically and mentally).

Not having Armstrong anymore has led to two things:

1) He's had to take more attacking responsibility on the ball, which he's still doing better than last season (assist v Watford for example)

2) His passing options are massively decreased, so he has to hold onto it for longer and has reverted to backwards/sideways to keep possession, which is clearly what they are all coached to do these days

I think he's also stepped up as Captain; he's never going to be a Gregan-type leader but if you look at the Rovers goal, it was him who won the header then went chasing out to try and stop the cross in the 94th minute, while everyone else stood still.

Overall, he takes a lot of flak because he's on the ball a lot, slowing us down without creating much - and he definitely doesn't score enough goals.

Both Lowe and PH have stuck him just in front of the back five and he ends up as an extra defender in a team that already has McCann scuttling about, winning tackles but creating nothing.

Personally, I'd like to see him further forward; leave McCann/Thompson to defend and see how BW does when he's trying to find Osmajic in the final third, rather than from the edge of our own box.

The big test is the next few months; after last season's disgraceful collapse, BW came out and said it can't ever happen again.

Well . . . let's bloody see. 😒

Am I allowed to leave this here for evidence against the “he only ever passes sideways and backwards” debate?

Of course you can.

oh and if people think potts is slow now..
take on board..this is our midfield talisman/saviour
creative pirloesque mainstay of the midfield next season
only going to get worse

If he is so good/balanced midfield playmaker/disruptor
how much could we sell him for?.

Ben's performance definitely was impacted positively by having Moran in the side.

The attacking intent by Devine, Moran and Dobbin and their showing for the ball gave him the chance to play it forward more than he had been doing.

The manager may have been forced into a dynamic midfield we have been crying out for...... time will tell.

When a player admits he was lucky with a refereeing decision you know we’ve got away with one. Obviously their bloke was nowhere near as badly hurt as he was making out and I wonder if the refereeing knew he was exaggerating and that helped Whiteman.

I like that referee incidentally, he lets a lot go and allows physical contact.

Lucky to stay on the pitch last night. Few times this has happened this season.

Looks so much better when McCann or Thompson is not being played alongside him. And I am sure this only happened because of injuries and suspension.

He gets a lot of flak but I can’t think who else can play his role and show the same amount of energy, tackling and blocking.
Ignoring the bad foul, he showed last night all the above qualities plus creative forward passing and leadership.

Didn't make a single successful tackle last night!
