Ben's performance definitely was impacted positively by having Moran in the side.

The attacking intent by Devine, Moran and Dobbin and their showing for the ball gave him the chance to play it forward more than he had been doing.

The manager may have been forced into a dynamic midfield we have been crying out for...... time will tell.
I think managerial tactics over the last 4/5ish seasons have not helped Whiteman. I remember Doncaster giving him options going forward when he looked like a player. The first half of this season was the first time we have had a team set up at times during matches that also got the best out of him. I think Moran shows that McCann and Thompson are more of a problem than Whiteman.

It was a fairly typical brainless Whiteman challenge. His lack of pace meant he was never going to get anywhere near the ball. Most refs would have sent him off. Down to 10 men things could have turned out very different.

Has the refs decision kept us in the Championship and kept Hecky his job? Fine margins.

When a player admits he was lucky with a refereeing decision you know we’ve got away with one. Obviously their bloke was nowhere near as badly hurt as he was making out and I wonder if the refereeing knew he was exaggerating and that helped Whiteman.

I like that referee incidentally, he lets a lot go and allows physical contact.
Robin’s was asked about the Whiteman tackle in his post match interview, and his response was class. No criticism of the referee, and didn’t use that as an excuse for losing. He was more concerned about his players saving themselves for their upcoming international games.

As everyone’s said, fortunate to stay on the pitch. But he played well last night.

Could we upgrade in summer? Probably. But any suggestion he’s the problem is obviously insane and not worth taking seriously.
Most of the time the suggestion is because people don't realise football, in most instances, is no longer kick and chase.

It's methodical and sometimes about just retaining possession by keeping the ball moving, which is a key part of his job in this team.

We could definitely upgrade but he'd be one of the last of the usual lot that I'd be getting rid of.

Most Stoke fans are saying that they were so bad we’d have probably beat them with 10, and its hard to disagree with them

I don’t think the margins for either scenario were as fine as that. Clearly should have been a red card but when you have been on a run as bad as ours you sometimes need a break and all clubs get them from time to time as well as suffering from poor decisions.

Played well tonight and put in a nasty tackle. Needs more of the latter.

What, so he can get sent off in every match? He mistimes pretty much every single challenge he makes.

We won last night in spite of Whiteman - he's inept in all the basic fundamentals of being a football player, ie. tackling, passing, shooting, running

No, he needs a nastier side to him. He is clumsy in the tackle but he's pretty soft normally. Needs to get a few nudges and little kicks in, stuff that normally goes unpunished

Would like to see that as a per 90 stat.

And even more to see it if it doesn't count set pieces.
Yeah his open play chances created is much different. He's 7th in just our team for open play chances created per 90. But joint 2nd for open play xA per 90, so creating better open play chances when he does create them compared to others.

But pretty much all but Mason-Clark on this list take either some or all of the set pieces. Grimes only has two more open play chances created than Whiteman overall, and a slightly lower OP xA p90.

Yeah, they skew stats like this so much, and it's not like BW is a great set piece taker, but I assume every time we get any contact from a corner, that counts for him.

I thought that was one of his best performances in a long time. Why was that? probably because he had others around him pulling their weight. I have been very critical of him of late but Friday i thought that was a captains performance.

Yes he was lucky with the Thomas tackle , late yes but he got there as quick as he could , Thomas made a meal of it as well but I think Ben took one for the team there as they were breaking on us at speed

I'm not buying it, myself. Should have been sent off. Doesn't have the mobility or the defensive nous to play well by himself there.

Judging him as Captain and fundamental inspirational play maker, and a first name on the Team sheet then i would say that he's distinctly average.
However as we need a strong squad overall, if we had a more mobile upgrade to his role and another inspiring Captain, i would be fairly happy if he was just a part of a strong squad.

So, if he is in the top ten for chances created, are there similar stats, for the number of last man tackles and last man blocks of crosses and shots, if there are and he is in the top group again,(and i would be surprised if he is not) then he is a good player i.m.o.!
