You're not getting the best out of Keane if you just play him as the advanced CF every single game. Ched and Riis are injured so who knows when and in what state they'll return in. Stewart didn't make the bench yesterday so not sure if he picked up a knock or Lowe dosen't think he's ready to be involved.

Those options might just be good enough to finish above bottom 6 but nowhere near good enough for any top 10 challenge.

At least we know Kathryn Revitt's login on here at long last.😉

The only problem with this, if Keane was to only score 4 goals for the season, then we're are the goals coming from, we are not exactly flush with any other fit striker,let alone one to get us 15 or so goals for the season ? 🤔

Davies did flop imo considering he'd scored 6 goals for Bolton in the prem when they went down in 11/12 so to score less at league one level less than two years later was some going.

However Garner was already at the club and became very prolific as soon as Grayson came and Beckford joined around 2014 so there were great options in those days.

Also a young Robbo on loan as the Stewart type signing.

My comment was from 22 days ago. In this time we've signed Stewart which is a positive signing. Also we've signed Whatmough who may not be under 25 but he's only 26 and we've got him for a few years. He's bringing our average age down too. Situation has changed. Mads hadn't even played a game when I made that comment.

This summer has been a step in the right direction and I'm glad the club is trying to bring in more players we can develop and sell on. They're doing a good job at allaying concerns

Yeah, makes sense, & it's obviously all hypothetical - I just didn't think that at the time each of them signed for us that Keane & Davies was a particularly accurate comparison, considering age & where they both are/were in their careers.

Don't think for a while now we've known at this stage of a season where most of our goals will end up coming from - Riis was an unknown quantity when he first joined, & then the last couple of years we've been fortunate from January onwards with the likes of Archer & Cannon.

A player's ability can change pretty drastically once their into their mid-30s, more so than the difference between 30 & 32 for instance. Plus think it's fair to say he'd have been playing with 'better' players even in a relegated Bolton squad. I agree though we ended up with much better out & out goalscoring options at that time.

I'm hopeful that Keane will come good and as long as he stays fit follow on from his form with Wigan last season and at least hit the 15 goal mark for the season.
The issue for me is the lack of a strike partner or any cover if Keane was either injured or suspended.
We are unsure when Riis or Evans will return and when or still with Evans if he returns, how they will return, will Riis still have his burst of pace or could the injury have lost him that initial burst and power to get away from defenders ?
If Evans does return, will he still be that physical entity that out muscles defenders or could the possibility of serious injury from a miss placed and reckless challenge prey on his mind and lesson his effectiveness.
We don't know and won't until both are fit to take their place in the match day squad and get their match sharpness back, not going to be anytime soon.
That leaves us without a strike partner or even cover for Keane and also puts added pressure on him as our only realistic striker option and main goal scorer.🤔

Yeah, the lack of known depth is shocking, but sadly not a position we’ve not been in before at the start of the season. I can see the goals being shared around quite a bit over these first few matches.

Considering what they‘ve been through, anything we get from either Evans or Riis this season will be a bonus in my opinion.

Hopefully Riis will get back to how he was pre-injury, I think it will be the 2nd half of the season before we see him at his best.
If Evans does return, I can only realistically see him as an impact substitute at best,coming on for 15/20 minutes at the end of games as defended tire.
 
Supposing Cannon signs and they’re all fit, what would be our best front pairing?

I’d love to think Riis and Cannon would be spectacular if it clicked, but I think Keane + either Riis or Cannon

I think Keane could also slot in nicely behind the strikers as well as up top.

Cannon and Keane for me though with Stewart pushing for a place and giving Riis time to come back from injury in good time.

Ched would just be a plan b/wild card.

Cannon and Riis would give Mads so many thru ball possibilities. Would be seriously hard work for defenders trying to contain that pace. Nothing much would stick though if we were under pressure and without the ball for long periods.

I remember playing Fleetwood at home and 2-0 down at half-time. Enter Kevin Davies and we won 3-2, Joe Garner hat-trick and 3 assists for Davies. He didn't set the world alight but things did happen for those playing alongside him.

Only one assist. Kilkenny and Welsh with the first two.
 
Cannon's a no brainer even at the price mentioned. Evans will only be a bit-part player when he returns to (full) fitness, Riis wanted away before his injury last season and him firing on all cylinders would be a bonus, Stewart's a future investment and will probably take a little time to bed in, and Keano contributes lots, but will do well to regularly get into double figures in the Championship.
