Wise after the event

Pk Burnley pulled it off on one go. Their first attempt at the PO's to the promised land and they did it. Meanwhile we have had 4 goes hence we are the "Perennial Failures."

That we didn't do it in those 4 attempts should tell you all there is something about our club that is flawed.

Burnley have had about 9 goes at getting promoted unless you think they were not really trying to win games in the previous 8 seasons. PNE got to the play offs and narrowly missed out. And yes it has happened before. Most supporters like it when their clubs get into the top 6 but you use it as a stick to beat the club.

Get behind the club for a change or just fuck off.

I'd still love someone to tell me what exactly is in the genetic make up of PNE that can make us 'Perrenial Bottlers'

The fact is, that playing and management staff have to man up and do the job. It's individual teams and the fact that ours is not good enough. It's not a genetic thing- the only consistants in these big occasion failures are our fans. And you're crazy if you blame the fans for the PLAYERS bottling it or just being outclassed by a bigger club. It happens.

Burnley did very well. However this isn't their first attempt. They're just finally up there again.

Had a great tiime in Malaysia. Flight back however was a bit concerning as we developed engine problems just before flying over the Bay of Bengal which is always a hotpsot for turbulence.

Very interesting to witness the racism in such a country where the government i.e. indigenous Malayan has introduced special financial incentives for their own race to undergo a fast breeder programme. Interestingly the same financial incentives are not available to the Chinese-Malaysian community.

While I was away how did everyone react to Burnley making the promised land on the same resources as PNE ? Plus they played 10 more games than us of which several were epic giant killing events.

I can assure you that most fans were just pleased for our near neighbours-let's face it, another Lancashire club-and wished them 'all the best' for next season ;-)

What do you think?!

Burnley had Ternant who was shit and then Cotterill who was shit. They took a long time to do anything about these poor managers, only a new chairman coming in seems to have moved them out of their rut. It would appear he sensed Cotterill was poor and got rid of him and was fortunate/wise enough to bring in an apparently good manager (Coyle needs to prove himself long term yet, is BD a good manager?) and had the great fortune to go a season with no injuries.

Burnley had no strategy for last season, they sold Lafferty for a bit of money and let the manager spend the money. Alexander and several other veterans had great seasons and as I said they had no injuries. They had their best season for ages at exactly the right time.

PS. Burnley's team is ancient (only 3 regulars are under 28) - which apparently contradicts your own "strategy" for bringing in good young players.

If Burnley's new chairman had a five year plan he apparently fucked up. It worked too soon.

I would agree with that on the whole. Who would have predicted that Alexander and Blake would have such great seasons? Blake has been found wanting at Premiership level and certainly will be again, but somehow, he hit form and was central to their success. Carlisle has been just an average Championship player for a while, Caldwell is getting on a bit but the likes of McCann and Eagles have provided the spark when needed and Patterson has proved a decent signing. But football isn't a science-Burnley hit on the right blend, avoided too many injuries and good luck to them-but they only finished TWO points above us. Notwithstanding their cup successes, I still maintain that there wasn't that much between us. If they'd been so great, they wouldn't have had to rely on the Play Offs-after all, they did finish FIFTH.

Where were we a year ago? Oh yes, we had just avoided relegation and the general consensus was that a top 10 finish would be regarded as successful. 😀

and there's the rub SG, just why didn't the "professional" scouts who had watched him not know he would never make it at our level ?

If we are going to take a gamble on such players then there is one at Grimsby i.e. Danny North. He's come back from a major injury. He's only 22 and if he could recapture his form he just may become similar to David Nugent. With our limited resources it would be worth the gamble of swapping any of Henderson, Sedgwick, Hawley or Elliott for him.

You have to consider the scout in this instance - Simpleton!
He played for Simpson at his last club - he obviously thought he could make the grade...D'oh!!!

postishead why would he want to do that when I was reading Michael Parkinson's autobiography ? On the way out I read "The Damned United" which I comend to you all. Was interesting to read about the events concerning Archie Gemmill's transfer under Alan Ball to Derby.

you do realise the damneds united's a work of fiction dont you Voldemort?

is what many of you accuse me of. Well just a reminder chaps, here I was telling you all what was going to happen.

Subsequent events proved me right and confirmed that there is something fundamentally wrong in the PNE club psyche that renders them the Perennial Failures. No one can deny that Burnley only had the same resources and support as PNE. The difference is they pulled it off. This was achieved by a board with a plan.Their manager got his signings right and their manager pulled off the Promised Land by playing the opposite to Irvine i.e. they were entertaining. While they were at it they also played 10 games more than PNE and knocked out more top flight clubs in just 8 months than PNE have in the past 40 years !

So here we are. By some minor miracle Irvine has got a fairly average PNE into the PO position despite having the worst forward line it's ever been my misfortune to see at this level.

Incredbily they have a real chance of making the PO's.And the club's statement of intent about delivering the promised land ?

"We won't be signing anyone."

Truly lamentable. Truly laugahble. It is for this very reason that PNE are unable to build attendances. The sceptics know that come the moment of truth PNE are the personification of the perennial failures.

Ultimately we could even make the PO final this season but we will once again fall at the final hurdle. True grit and determination can only take you so far. When it really matters you need to have a touch of class to provide that moment of genius that unlocks opposing defences. Quite simply we haven't got the required class and if PNE are not going to throw Mayor into battle on the right wing then they have just squandered a glorious opportunity by not signing flying winger Pilkington (who was once on our books !).

You just watch. We will have nonetity (taking up another wage) Nicholson in v Swansea for his "experience." Shortly after that we will be once again observing the inept shennanigans of "winger" Sedgwick tracking back for the umpteenth time because he's just given the ball away.

It's apparent that despite being presented with a golden opprtunity of finally accessing that £50 millon - £55 million pot of gold PNE will not be able to pull it off. Such a shame.

Just a quick question Voldemort. How many times have you seen Danny Mayor play?

I'm sure we worked out on here that Coyle and Irvine had spent similar on transfer funds (although wages may well be different, I can't anticipate them being too dissimilar).

Now that would involve CERTAIN people taking an interest in other threads, absorbing the information, & possibly adapting their thinking /stance accordingly....

I very much doubt any Scouts were involved.
Because, - Carl Hawley was there when he was manager of Carlisle United. Simpleton just thought he could make the transition.

Another case of Derek Shaw automatically backing his manager, without adding ANY input of his/The Boards own values/concerns. ( A similar scenario as with the Grezza-dispute:- where Shaw just rubber-stamps Simpson's wishes to remove another 'Bad-Apple', without considering any long-term /bigger picture )
