Matchday Thread PNE v Ipswich - 03/02/24 - KO:3PM - Championship

Thoughts on this?

This was for the first goal. Probably a foul isn’t it and one that VAR overturns I’d imagine.

THIS IS NOT ME SAYING I WANT VAR.

Not for me. If you look at where Clarke plays the ball it’s miles in front of Morsy and for me it looks like he’s tried to buy a cheap foul by “anticipating the contact” from Keane, who’s just eased him out of the way. There’s a reason none of his teammates called for it.

Would’ve been incredibly soft and if the roles were reversed I’d be more annoyed at my defenders not stopping him having a shot than I would be at the ref for not giving the foul

Neither side has any grounds to complain about the ref. He was atrocious for both teams

Half-time, Ipswich bring on 9ft 3in striker who, let's be frank, is not quick but excellent in the air and physically difficult.

RULE NUMBER 1, push up!

Why? Because he is dangerous in our box, fairly useless outside of it and is not going to run away from anyone.

IT IS NOT TOO DIFFICULT IS IT?

The interesting question is, are the players choosing to play that way or is it a tactical adjustment from RL?

Can see it either way.

Personally, if we were in the PL, I don’t see that goal standing.

So let’s be glad we aren’t.

I haven’t read all the thread yet but will do so later.

Firstly what a first half. I was very pleasantly surprised and chuffed doesn’t even begin to cover it. We went in at half time deservedly 3 goals in front. I can’t remember Freddie having a save to make.

Second half we did the usual sitting back getting deeper and deeper but until the subs I thought we kept them at bay quite well. There was a 10-15 minute spell in the second half when we were excellent again and, how the hand ball outside the area wasn’t spotted I don’t know but worse, how did Mads not get a penalty? That decision was ridiculous.

Overall I enjoyed every minute of the first half and some of the second half too, we won that is all that counts. COYW. Oh and the ref taking a bow made me laugh.

Not long back, having had to call off somewhere before arriving home, so not read any of the thread yet.
This is my brief take on it.
3-0 up at half time albeit with the ball running for us against a team with fluidity and good pass and movement and great space finding, BUT with a suspect defence.
Maybe a little fortunate but from that score line @ HT then you should end up winning 4-1 or 5-2 or something like that, you do NOT sit back and let them come at you.
Watching the way they came out for the second half with their little energetic warm up with balls and us ambling out like a Victorian 1890's Team, I said to my lad these are coming at us from the off, if he doesn't counteract it by us doing something to take it back to them then, we will be lucky to win 3-2.
Within minutes of the re start, i could see exactly that scenario, and we where indeed lucky to win in the end.
They were great going forward but suspect at the back, why sit back and invite pressure, when we are just not capable of doing it.
A win against a good side, riding high should have been a cause to come off elated, not discussing whether the Manager is a tactical pygmy or not, as we where doing on the journey back up the Motorway.

The problem we now have, even a decent win doesn't cut it with fans.
Ryan Lowe has alienated a majority of the fanbase so much they just dislike him so much only a change will begin to mend things.
Even after a wonderful start today the whole atmosphere was muted.
I don't see how the club can plan ahead with the scenario we have.
I will say it now, even if we make the top six (unlikely) I want him out, it's irretrievable.

On the other hand, RL’s team blasted McKenna’s team 3-0 in the first half.

TBF I haven’t seen nor heard much about the game today- but pne with a “par” manager would probably not be expected to win that game today. It just feels churlish for so many people saying the win is in spite of the manager.
The win is down to the manager but the fact we nearly fucked it up is also down to him - which leaves a fairly flat feeling

Agree with nearly all of that. When McAvoy was potted Lowe was one of the managers I wanted to replace him (what do I know…)

I now think he’s a fraud of a manager and a gobshite to boot. But ultimately, if he delivered a play off spot he’s achieved the clubs alleged ambition to push for PL football and at the end of the day, this is a results business. The issue I have is that all too often the football is dire and so are the results.

Agree, whilst Fisher used to do it and get away with it, defenders buying cheap fouls in a dangerous area are sooner or later going to come a cropper.
His Team mates should be castigating him for being weak in the challenge. Never a foul by Keane, although the ref did try to level things up by giving a ridiculous non foul against Mads right on the edge of our Box.
