Team v Will Still’s (?) Saints

I'd guess he means someone like Thompson or Potts returning to fitness, rather than a completely unfit free transfer going straight into the matchday squad?

Jamal Lewis would be a useful pickup, but I thought we had registered a full squad? Can't remove people now, can we? Unless they remembered Small didn't need to be registered.

Concerns about Lewis would be he’s not kicked a ball in anger for 6 months. Wasn’t even involved in the PFA preseason stuff

Suppose we need to take what we can get in that position

Lewis would be as good as we could hope to get and a decent free pick up. Confirms what I’ve been told about the injuries, they are mainly long term.

I think it was obvious that both players who went off last week would be out for some time, they both looked relatively serious - especially Gibson, who looked in some distress. Vukcevic might end up being longer because of the way he plays with bursts of pace being something he relies on.

If it was obvious sat in the stands it would also have been clear to the club pretty early on so they’ve had a week to prepare their ‘response’. Presumably any out of contract player hasn’t come completely out of the blue and if it’s Lewis I’ll be more than happy. He’s a good athlete (he was a runner for England) and he was unlucky to get a serious ankle injury whilst in Brazil on loan in the last year of his contract. He might even have continued training at Newcastle?

Jamal Lewis is about as good as it gets in what is ultimately now a really poor market.

Natural athlete with bags of experience at this level despite still being mid to late twenties.

Concerns are him not having any game time of late and his loan at Watford recently, he was singled out as a particularly poor performer.

But, this is real dire straits. Vuk is a proper kick in the stones injury and coming back won’t be plain sailing given his game relies on acceleration and the nature of the injury. Typically our long term absentees are all wing back cover in Potts, Brady and even Thompson.

Honestly, after plucking the Montenegrin Marcelo from absolute obscurity, I have little doubt that Hecky and co. could get a tune out of Jamal Lewis again if he’s a signing they opt for.
