Matchday Thread PNE v Huddersfield Town | 08.08.26 | KO: 3PM | League Cup 1st Round (Goodison Park)

Wallace & Gromit is fine for a quick 30 second blast. But when it plays on loop for five minutes, it’s genuinely embarrassing.
Was it that long? I thought it was longer than usual but I did think the same - as part of a bigger sequence it’s fine but not on it’s own. They’d probably run out of songs and groups linked to Liverpool, everything they played was from a Liverpool group.

Iversen - nowt to do all game aside from the goal which he could do nothing with. Won us the penalty
Pol - needs to be the next moved out. He was rubbish. A few reasonable defensive contributions but offered nothing going forward. Crossing is shocking
Offiah - MOTM. Flawless in second half
Lindsay - did very well when he came on
Hughes - better at LB than CB but we need a LB that we can rely on regular
Vukcevic - probably wasn’t fit but defensively all over the place, doesn’t look like he can play in a 4
McCann - not sure why Thompson is getting pellets when McCann was much worse. Offered pretty much nothing
Thompson - very limited. Kept things moving but need better than both
Devine - awful in the first half. Got more influential in the second, still looks like he’s missing a yard of pace
Osmajic - anonymous. Didn’t have much service but bullied physically and never positioned right.
Lang - looked fit and worked hard in a fruitless role

Gibson - was terrible even before the sending off
Erabi - did more in 20 minutes than Osmajic all game. Physically battled despite not being very tall, should’ve had a pen, could’ve scored a great volley and then great reaction for the goal. Starts next week
Burg - quiet when he came on, but pulled shot assisted Erabi and scored the winning penalty. Fed off the fans who were right behind him. Should do wonders for any confidence issues

Even from the massive Over Wyre

First galf started better wasn't long before torpor set in, red card for shirt pulling 40 yards from goal fair enough, shirt pulling in area noo penalty given, how does that work?
Played fairly well in second period actually thought we deserved the draw, like the look of Erbil and we made Jack Watmough look ike a world beater

Goodison looks a tired old football ground

You obviously enjoyed yourself, nice spelling 🍺

Desperately need a new Whiteman replacement. I heard Rovers are looking at Morsey who would do a job for us despite his age as he’s class imo. We were dreadful in midfield today and got out passed by Huddersfield after Gibson had got foolishly sent off. He was too far forward when a ball over the top caught him out and he just grabbed Fletcher from behind as he was going towards the goal. Definite red card in my book and from then on Hudders took control. Fletcher headed against the post before their right center back outjumped Lang from an unnecessary free kick conceded by Vuk, planting a header past a stranded Iversen. We came out with more intent in the second half with Lindsay at the back and Hughes replacing Vuk. We did mount a few sporadic attacks mainly by pumping the ball forward aerially for Lang to chase down the channels and even the introduction of Erabi and Burgzorg didn’t change much because of the lack of service. Erabi did win two headers against Whatmough which was two more than Milli had done in the previous 80 minutes. Burgzorg looked lost, not surprisingly having only joined yesterday, but when he found the ball at his feet in the last minute of injury time, he dribbled to the right of the area and fired a shot across the keeper which someone deflected into the corner of the net just in front of me. Impossible to tell who it was but their was mayhem behind the goal and we felt like we’d won. We’d definitely got out of jail. Daniel Iversen’s brilliant first two saves in the penalty shootout won us the tie. Huddersfield will feel gutted to lose but despite their numerical advantage they never really troubled our keeper in the second half and after all that were in the next round 😀

I almost totally agree except for the McCann Thompson issue. Thompson is just a nothing player, always seems to take one more touch than he should - the incident in the second half when he delayed the pass down the left until the player was offside (I thought it was Hughes but it seems like it was Devine) a case in point. McCann bailed him out a few times and in the first half was almost doing Vukcevic’s job for him.

I really hope he wasn’t fit incidentally because he was beyond poor. Having said that, he had Hughes playing inside him in the two and that simply doesn’t work. Lindsay should have been on as soon as Gibson was dismissed.
