One of my most “ interesting “ away trips was at the Goldstone Ground in 1977 in the old Division 3….Well , due to living here for over 30 years, it's Brighton. I went to the last game at the Goldstone Ground , seen them at "home" in Gillingham, and at the Theatre Of Trees - Withdean , and the Amex. I was always in the away end when North End were down here though. I fear it will be a while before I'll be doing that again.
Brighton were top and North End were 5th….
We took 500 fans on a special train and from the moment we arrived at Hove train station it was lively.
Half way through the first half, the Brighton fans lobbed a very large slab of concrete into the middle of the North End fans ….
We lost the game 2-0 but that was an aside …
After the game there were running battles all the way back to the train station….
The one thing that stands out in my memory was the bright green motorcycles that the police used to try and keep the fans apart.
It was a long long day but I was glad to get home in one piece 😂😂
