Ben Davies

Ben Davies

On his full league debut McKenna did score against Wycombe. However, he'd already started two games in the Auto Windscreen Shield, a 2-0 win away at Chesterfield and a 1-0 defeat at York. He also came on as a sub for Kevin Kilbane in the 1-1 draw at home to Watford. So in that respect, McKenna wasn't thrown in the deep end as much as Davies was today.

I think that the goal you are recalling was in an FA cup tie against Walsall (Round 2). I remember watching it a second time on the TV highlights programme and it looked just as spectacular then as it did in the ground. The third round game that season was the memorable Kurt Nogan match against Arsenal.

Does it not concern you though that Westley felt he was ahead of Buchanan though. How Davies did or didn't do is irrelevant for me

Buchanan is obviously a better option, fuck knows what his logic was in leaving him out. But I'll give Westley credit for giving young lad a game especially when he is under such pressure.

Buchanan has been our best player in the last six weeks or so for me. Consistent run in the first team had done him a world of good.

Not sure Westley is keen on him though, seem to remember he dropped him and then said something about Buchanan not being able to understand his tactics and playing SCS at left back instead. Which was a disaster IIRC.

100% Buchs has been 1 off the best players last 6/7 games must be more to it,

I thought he looked an absolute liability at first but improved slightly as time went on. Shouldn't be anywhere near the first team at present though. The real worry is why Westley felt he should start ahead of an established award winning left back in Buchanan. I think Buchanan will be gone come summer.[/QUOTE]

I suspect Buchanan will be gone by the end of next week...

He's still 18months that's a lot to pay up,

McKenna did score in the F.A. Cup 2nd round in 1998. However, the game against Wycombe was in 1997.

I suspect that Tranmere would take him back at the drop of a hat (and looking at the respective league positions I think that he would be more than interested provided that the salary differential was not too great).

Perhaps Buchanan performs better in matches than in training, and GW cannot accept this. It sounds to me that it could be a bit like the article posted about Hume the other day, where he said something about being one of the worst in training. When I read that I wondered if that was why Hume had not been accepted by GW.

Yes he did get caught out for the two goals but he more than made up for it with his attacking play. He is only 17. Leave the lad alone. Is it any wonder our players lack confidence at the moment.

Some of the folk on here need to give their heads a shake at times. A 17 year old lad! (Compare him to the little shite at Swansea this week, same age!) Came into an underperforming team, a crowd expecting failure, playing out of his natural position. 8000 people instead of a dozen. I thougt the lad did fantastically if Im honest yet some on here dont even have the humility within them to give the lad a pat on the back. Shame on you TBH.

My issue is he started ahead of Buchanan who has been one of our better players recently. Westley's treatment of Buchanan has been a disgrace in my opinion. I question anyone to give me a valid reason why a youth team player, playing out of position, should start ahead of Buchanan.

My point exactly. Whatever their differences (if they have any) the good of the team and results should come first.

Correct. I don't think anyone is giving Ben any stick. He's a young lad who came up against a tough opponent today and didn't hide. Yes he looked lost in the first half but that is understandable at his young age and when making his debut (out of nowhere). The fault here lies with the manager. He shouldn't be throwing him into the first team like that when he has a perfectly good left back sat on the bench. He also could have played Bailey Wright at left back and put Huntington in the middle. It's just further unneeded disruption to the back four.

Not only that, imagine how Buchanan feels. It was a complete disrespect to him, when he's actually been one of our better players recently. Westley has treated him very badly.

Davies reminded me of a thin stripling of a boy, years ago, Mark Lawrenson. He has the same assured style and looks a great prospect. Not sure Buchanan will feel that good about being left out. Unless he carrying a knock, he'll attract some bids in this next week.
