Billy Davies v The rest

Billy Davies v The rest

Albertan, stats only tell you so much, you always have to look behind them.

Who would most people on here vote for as the best manager over the past 12 or so years?

Answer is Moyes..........at Championship level he averaged approx 1.81pts per game.

Who would be the second best in a proper honest vote?

Answer would be Billy Davies.........he averaged approx 1.75pts per game.

Forget the rest, Simpson, Irvine, Ferguson and Brown all had inferior pts per game returns.

That is all I am interested in, which manager can do the best job for our football club. The tittle tattle that goes on behind closed doors that none of us are privy to, to me doesn't mean a thing.

Anyone would think that BD is the first manager to have a tiff with a chairman. Could it have been that BD was promised certain things like funding, and then the club renaged on that agreement?

Who knows? Who cares? Lets just get on with the job of moving our football club forwards, and who better qualified that we can afford, or who would come here, than our Billy?

Love him or hate him, guess what...............he gets the job done, that's all that matters.

And by the way, I wouldn't want a manager who doesn't put his case forward to the chairman or the owner, we need a strong personality like BD to let uncle Trev know when and where to spend any available cash.

If stats (as you call them) are not important, how come the team with most points gets promoted? Why don't the league investigate to see what is "behind them"?

Don't talk crap, the pts per game that I quote mean everything.........NOTHING ELSE MATTERS IN FOOTBALL, because it is the team that averages the most pts per game that wins the division, and that is a fact!

I also predicted that 2 players would be sold during the summer. Am I Mystic Meg? No. Fact is, Claude Davis had a release clause in his contract at £2.5m which Sheff Utd triggered. It was in the Sheffield papers that they were talking to him and his agent. Tyrone Mears was out of contract. Again you don't have to be a soothsayer to predict what could happen.

Some people say you are in the know. Hmmm.

Maybe you're missing the point from the Big E.

If you are trying to build something then dont take away the foundation stones or the building blocks.

And please dont try to make the lad look like a know all know nothing. He is usually very accurate and I would back him before almost all others. You'll end up looking very silly. Happy New Year by the way.🙂

This + 1

Happy New Year John:thumbsup::gentry:

Hi big E glad to see you on was commenting earlier hoping you'd be on! Any news on all these rumours today is this Westley or Sammy Lee candidates or is as Chip Barm said is Billy "Job Done"?

Not been told anything regarding westley or sammy lee.Talks with davies are still ongoing(hickson from radio lancs has confirmed this)but no terms agreed as yet. I think the LEP article today regarding BD suggests that things could soon be coming to a conclusion 1 way or the other as they are not really known for printing idol speculation in recent years!

There were a number of things conspired against us - add to your list the problem O'Neil had the night before and the non sending off of their goalkeeper and you're there, although I think it might have been Claude that slipped?

As much as I would love him to come back, for balance it must be pointed out that I'm pretty sure Davies himself has expressed his regrets over his role in the result that day.

You could be right, maybe it was Claude that slipped, but I thought Mawene was playing right back, hence that is why I nominated him for the 'slip'.

The goalkeeping thing to me wasn't that big of an issue, as even if Walker had been sent off, there was very little time left and I suspect West Ham would still have hung on for the win, even with 10 men.

I am sure every manager has regrets once a big final is lost. It is also possible that Lewis was not himself as he made that miracle return from an operation, and I am sure the occasion affected the young David Nugent.

All in all I would not blame Billy Davies for that defeat, we came close, but were just not good enough or strong enough on the day. With a fit Alexander, a totally fit Lewis, and without the O'Neil problem, who knows, it could have been a different story.

Winning games is always easier with hindsight.

Agree totally

I had the impression we wouldn't have scored if we played all day, very disappointing considering we'd bossed them home and away.

Agreed that football is a results business, and we all want to see winning football.

But clubs such as ours must have a good youth set-up, as we cannot afford to pay for "the finished article".
If he shows such scant regard for the youth team as he did last time he was here then I would worry about our long term future.

If people are just after a quick fix, then Billy probably is the right man, but if, like Peter Ridsdale talked about, we want to have stability at the club, then personally I couldn't think of anyone worse!

If you think appointing BD would give us stability, we desperately need, then, to use one of yours Alby, you need to give your heads a shake!

He thought long and hard about dropping Nugent but decided to go with him on the day. It was Claude and Matt Hill that fucked up when Zamora scored...and he didnt have to play Mawene at right back as Alexander had recovered and was on the bench.....if only

I had a terrible feeling that day. We had beaten the Boleyn boys on the 3 previous meetings between the 2 teams. Law of averages said we were due a loss. The match got the Hammers promotion and saved Pardew his job, but North End paid the price.

I'm not trying to make the lad look like he knows nothing. He did that himself. But thank you for your very lucid cotribution. Have you decided who you will side with when Davies falls out with Hemmings/Ridsdale?

I think that Billy Davies would be a different manager from the one we knew.

A period of time out of the game will have given him time to reflect, and if he took this job it surely wouldn't be on the assumption that he would be backed to the hilt.

He has a point to prove with this club, I'm sure, and if he wants this job I'm certain we could find no more determined a manager. The stats may be a slight red herring in that he was well-backed and in a different division last time around. But his intelligence, and ability to communicate and enthuse players has not changed.

The first thing Alexander and Unsworth talked about when taking over was doing proper research on the opposition. That is something that Davies would have instilled in Alexander and many other players who have worked under him: Leave no stone unturned. Work harder than the other guy. Instill a philosophy into the club.

If Peter Ridsdale can bring Billy Davies back to this club it will be a great achievement by him and a fantastic opportunity for us. We will then have a top six squad and the best manager in the league, with half a season to go. If we can do it, we'd be mad not to. What's the worst that can happen?

One in 50 clubs in this country has any sort of stability. In our position, we're not going to be one of them any time soon. If we had the patience to stick with a guy over a long period of time we wouldn't have sacked Alan Irvine.

All you can do is appoint the best person available at the time.

i'd love Davies to come back but I don't think we have a top 6 side.

We have some very good players for this level- I like the spine of the side- hume, coutts, doyle, mccombe, Morgan...... suddenly looks solid through the middle- problem is- two of those are on short term loans, and hume has no strike partner with Mellor out long term. if the loanees go back we have further problems.

going off most of the season we're not great down the flanks........ mayor has no defensive attributes or awareness and still continues to make the wrong decision- being largely greedy and running into brick walls instead of releasing the ball. parry goes missing on the other flank and hasn't really done it for us.

gray looks ok at right back but mclaughlin and smith seem to slow on the left.

I think Billy or whoever comes in has a real job on their hands- we've leaked a lot of goals this year and we're carrying a lot of poor quality players.

Correct me if im wrong but once BD was given the job full time didnt he get rid of yth boss simon davey and recruit kevin thelwell from the welsh fa and glyn salmon from tranmere to restructure the yth dept due to the lack of quality we were producing!! My point is BD was obviously wanting to sort out our poor yth policy.

Now we have crossed swords recently but dont let that make you think I am being a smart arse, cuz I am not.

Question. At this time after the disaster of relegation what would you prefer at this time?

Stability or promotion?

For me, get the promotion then the stability.

Happy New Year 🙂

A rather eloquent appraisal. But didn't Billy have some time to reflect when he was unemployed after his Derby sacking. And yet he was still up to his old tricks when he got the Forest job. What makes you think it would be different this time? Let's say he loses a few games. It would be so tempting for him to say the team aren't good enough and that we need to spend big to get in the play offs to cover himself. What is it that leads you to believe that he is now a reformed character?
