Billy Davies v The rest

Billy Davies v The rest

I agree, Lewis, Nugent, McKenna even O'Neil to me all played like they had sand in their boots. But that is what the play offs are all about. The best team doesn't always win, and some quite ordinary teams have won Championship play off finals, Hull City, Burnley, Blackpool, even Watford all in recent years.

From watching those teams in their respective play off finals, I don't really think any of them were better than the Billy Davies team that lost to West Ham...........on the day of the final they may have been, but not over a season's games.

Absolutely 100% spot on.

He was under 24 and hence we are entitled to a tribunal fee. I trust you will be big enough to apologise for your outburst.

I have no problem in apologising when necessary and when appropriate, but not one person so far has supported your stance on this issue, whilst several have pointed out that Mears was not out of contract.

I tend to believe that Mears was not out of contract, as I don't recall a big issue being made (by fans) of North End doing what they did with Eddie Lewis, and expecting him to re-sign, but he didn't and went to Leeds for free.

How come you are challenging me over this, but not the other guys who seem more insistant that in fact Mears was not out of contract? I think you are selecting me because you figure I am an easy target with not as it were living on the doorstep of Deepdale.

You made the statement about Mears being out of contract, hence the onus is on you to prove it.

Well it is nice to know that our 10 years of Championship football was based on our youth set up,what a load of tosh.
What you need is a good scouting system so you can pick up players like Nugent and Fuller, but that went when Davies went.
Could it be that they got fed up of their hard work finding players being sold off.

Do you know what "finished article" means? How can Nugent be described as such when he was a rough diamond picked up from Div 4 for 100K?

We were the only club prepared to take a gamble on him.

In any case I was talking about the here & now, and not what our transfer policy was 6 or 7 years ago!

At this moment in time I cannot see us shelling out huge sums for "supposed finished articles/seasoned pros" such as Chaplow, Carter, Nicholls, etc. can you?

Finding gems from the lower divisions like Nugent as well as developing further the excellent youth set up is the only way forward for a club like ours. That is unless TH is planning to do a Jack Walker!?

What's your point?

He made 39 league and cup appearances in the 2005–06 season as Preston reached the Championship play-offs semi-final. During that season, instead of having his surname Mears on the back of his shirt, he had his nickname "Tye", a rare occurrence in English football. In July 2006, after rejecting two bids from Charlton Athletic, Preston accepted an offer for Mears from West Ham United.
Mears signed for West Ham for an initial £1 million in July 2006, rising to £1.9 million depending on appearances and possible future international recognition with England. However, he was only to make six league and cup appearances for West Ham as he struggled to break into the first team.

you've moved the goalposts there mate, I don't think that's what you originally meant at all.

If it is, then you've nothing to worry about have you- because as you point out- Billy Davies signed Nugent and Whaley amongst others, rejuvenated the Youth set up by bringing in Glynn and got the best out of his players.

I don't know why everyone is so concerned about the youth set up- the priority is getting back into the championship so that we can improve our revenue streams. The youth set up has not produced one youth player we can yet class as a championship standard player.

Not so, I distinctly remember an offer for Nugent to Bury from Sheffield Wednesday.........what happened was the we outbid Wednesday and Nugent came to Deepdale, after Nugent's agent advised him to turn us down. His agent I believe wanted a bigger salary offer for his player.

He won't be able to prove it because it isn't true. I know Wiki is notoriously unreliable but there are quotes from Mears himself. A google search will also confirm that he had two years left.

Maybe kc will apologise?

I also seem to remember Burnley being involved.

Exactly, and that is why I was one of the few who supported BD in giving 100% total focus onto the first team, and even disbanding the reserves. We only had/have so much money to go around, and all the talk of this new band of young players coming through sounded very exciting, but to be honest, if the young guns are not making that big of an impact in League One, I think we can forget about them being a force in the Championship, at least for quite a long time.

We had huge success bringing in the likes of Nugent, Whaley (for a while), St Ledger and Kelvin Wilson could have turned out OK under different circumstances. Bringing in young hand picked players developed by other clubs was a fairly successful formula for PNE, developing our own youngsters hasn't really been the success story that we all expected..........and in terms of how much it must cost, is it worth it?

How am I moving goalposts?

All I did was point out that we cannot afford large fees on the "finished article" anymore as we have in the past, we obviously couldn't afford then either in hindsight!

In my book, 20 yr old kids from Div 4 cannot really be described as such?

Of course the youth set-up is vital, as producing our own players will save us fortunes. We have a lot of young lads on the fringes waiting for their chance, who I think have struggled on occasion coming into struggling team devoid of confidence, put them into a side doing well & I think some of them will flourish.

I am standing by, but won't hold my breath.

What gets me is that I only asked how come we got a fee for him if he was out of contract, yet more than one other person actually replied to kc stating how much time Mears still had on his contract, yet kc decides to have a go at me.

Come on kc..........your apology will be accepted. Let's have it.

By the fucking Christ I wish you would.

For about an hour.

Very, very true. Strangely enough Davies' own promotion winning Derby side weren't a patch on the well oiled machine he built at North End. Against West Brom in the play off final they were pretty awful but just nicked it. I remember Chris Perry in the post match interview was so fuming they'd beaten a far superior West Brom side he correctly predicted they would choke in the prem.

The play offs are a lottery, we're just cursed.

Like you say

Scunthorpe and Chester both bid for Nugent when we did whilst Burnley had "sniffed" in his direction.

Facts, Neal, facts.

I shall flick your right ear next time I see you for failing to know this.

You did move the goal post because I never mentioned buying the finished article.

OK, my memory obviously isn't as razor-sharp as yours, but Scunny & Chester can't really be classed as serious competition, and if the Owls, Burnley weren't prepared to meet the fee for him, then we were the only ones who took the "gamble" in the end! So I am right after all!

Sorry for asking, but are you on the red pills or on the blue ones:question:

I brought it up but then you highlighted it in bold on my post (see post 227) to say you disagreed with me.

I am not suggesting we get all our players from our own youth set-up, but we certainly need to be producing some.

We do need to be scouring the lower leagues for the next Nugent, and PL reserves for the next Macken, spending smallish fees. The days of spending 750K on the Nicholls/ Carters of this world are long gone (thankfully).
