COVENTRY CITY never seem to get any joy at Deepdale.
In fact, the Sky Blues have never won at Preston in the league and on Saturday they only had themselves to blame for not putting an end to that dreadful statistic.
Having got themselves in the lead with the best move of the game, they somehow managed to put the ball in the back of their own net before the break and gift the home side the winner in the second half to add to what is becoming a worrying trend of individual errors that has cost the Sky Blues dear in their last four games.
If the club’s hopes of making a late push for the play-offs were fading fast following their midweek defeat at Bristol City, they were completely ended at Preston who, despite sitting in an enviable sixth place after taking three points from Coventry, didn’t look anything special on this showing and would arguably have lost had they not had a significant helping hand from their opponents.
The Lilywhites’ biggest strength was in their use of the flanks where wide men Chris Sedgwick and Ross Wallace put in a string of crosses in the first half amid some shaky defending while the big lumbering centre forward Jon Parkin, or The Beast as he is affectionately known by North Enders, bullied and fouled his way through the game to good effect and never really looked like scoring in a wide open first half in which City had their fair share of chances.
