Matchday Thread Coventry City v PNE -23/02/24 - KO:7.45PM

Way I see it if hughes stands his ground then he gets clattered at neck height and possiblyhurt and probably gets a foul. Spur of the moment, he ducked to protect himself!

If you’re going to challenge like that then accept the consequences.

I’ve not seen this challenge and incident.
Is there a clip of it anywhere?

Ok ta.
Seen it now.
Unfortunate challenge in my view, nothing malicious intended at all. Hughes was watching the ball, Cov player challenged for it from behind him coming in ar some speed.
It’s the seriousness of the injury that’s caused the furore.

When Riis scored their player didn’t jump and Riis went over him, similar situation, not an illegal move as far as I can see because it’s the momentum of the Cov player that makes it bad.

Feel sorry for the fella, must have been very painful and a big loss to Coventry team.

Proper weird set of fans this lot - ‘illegal’ move and rounds of applause in the 2nd minute? Their lad jumped for the ball like he was going for the high jump world record - and that is why he ended up doing his pelvis.

If you watch it, he’s anticipating having to jump as high as he can in order to beat Hughes - last time I checked, Hughes is not obliged to go up for the challenge…he doesn’t, which exaggerates Sakamoto’s leap (quite impressive really). He does make contact - but it’s ‘natural’ contact given how close they were, and not because Hughes has made any sort of ‘movement’ into him.

Note - not one Coventry player protests or complains about it. Hughes us done nothing wrong, it’s probably more to the fact that they have lost one of their better players.

Exactly, it’s a split second decision, how can you have an on the spot planned strategy? It’s totally stupid to even consider intent.
Looks like Hughes saw the height of the ball with no chance to get a head on it and just let it run out .. you see it so often when defenders ‘sell a dummy ‘ header and let the ball go over their head back to the keeper of a goal kick

Watched that Hughes/Saka incident again and there’s even less in it than what I thought seeing it at the time. The lad jumps half a mile into the air without planning on how he’s going to land. Hughes gives him a mini bump but it’s just a wild jump and unfortunate landing.

The way I see it, is the Coventry player was intending to use contact with Hughes, in order to assist his jump for the ball. Hughes has seen that he’s no chance of getting to the ball, and chooses to pull away which leaves the Coventry player out of control. The awful injury has absolutely nothing to do with Hughes.

I like how Coventry fans are getting over excited about beating a team so far below them in the pyramid whose players in the offseason will be flipping burgers at the local fast food joint.
