Preston boss Phil Brown has put paid to Derby County’s attempts to sign Paul Hayes on loan.
A possible move to Pride Park for the striker had been bubbling under for quite some time, but Brown chose to block it when the Rams started to be dragged towards the lower reaches of the table.
There is still the chance of 27-year-old Hayes being lent out before the closure of the Football League loan window later this month.
But that wouldn’t be to a club engaged with North End in the Championship relegation dogfight.
Brown told the Evening Post: “I wasn’t prepared to lend Paul to Derby. Why should I benefit any football club in and around where we are in the Championship?
“I have had regular chats with Paul, he is frustrated and just wants to play, which I can understand. He is willing to go out on loan and that is something we have talked about.
“It would only be if it was right for me as manager of Preston North End.
“If it was a club higher up the table or in another division, maybe it would happen.”
Hayes, a Bosman signing from Scunthorpe last May, has already had one loan spell away from Deepdale this season, joining Barnsley for two months.
He is among a clutch of strikers competing for a place in Brown’s attack as PNE look to defy the odds and claw their way out of relegation danger.
Iain Hume’s return to action as a second-half substitute in the derby clash with Burnley following a hamstring injury was a big boost.
The Canadian front man will get a run-out in the reserves against Wrexham tomorrow afternoon (2pm) – a game which has been switched to Deepdale from Chorley – to sharpen up his match fitness.
Chris Brown is likely to join Hume in a side featuring a number of players from the first-team squad.
He has been sidelined since picking up a knee injury early in Brown’s first game in charge against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup.
Reflecting on Hume’s return to the fray after a four-match absence, Brown said: “Iain is going to play a major part in our survival campaign.
“He is bright, lively, sharp and bubbly character who just wants the ball when he gets on the field of play.
“Iain shows initiative, he closes down in the right manner and has bundles of energy.
“Whether we can get that for 90 minutes and then for the 12 games after that, I don’t know – it’s a balancing act.
“Let’s get our best players out there and see what happens.
“Iain, I believe, is undoubtedly one of our best players, so hopefully he’ll come through the reserve game unscathed and be ready for Norwich.”
On the fitness front, Brown reported that Amine Linganzi and Callum Davidson were edging closer to returns from injury.
Linganzi is recovering from hernia surgery, the midfielder having been injured 45 minutes into his debut against Leicester in January.
His rehabilitation is being done at parent club Blackburn, with Brown predicting he’ll be back in a fortnight.
Club captain Davidson is three weeks away from full fitness as he battles against a recurring calf muscle problem.
