I wanted Ryan to be our manager and was glad he signed in December 2021. He was a young, up-and-coming manager, and Plymouth had been playing some good football. I was disappointed with the fact his backroom staff didn't follow but hey-ho, that's life.
Ryan came in on a wave of positivity, referring to playing attacking, entertaining football. Season tickets sold like hotcakes and everyone was a happy camper. I think a lot of people who brand others as "anti-Lowe" conveniently ignore the fact that a large proportion of the fanbase were very receptive of his arrival and the comments he made in press conferences. The football that followed wasn't particularly enjoyable to watch, which was a combination of an inexperienced manager, an injury prone squad and a lack of funds.
I don't particularly like Ryan. I think he talks a lot of shite, albeit accepting that most managers also share this trait to an extent, which is problematic if you aren't winning games and / or playing entertaining football. I couldn't give a toss if he wears white trainers, I couldn't give a toss if he goes on Sky Sports, I couldn't give a toss if he does his Klopp tribute act after an away game victory. All I care about is that North End win as many games as possible. I think that's the case for the overwhelming majority of football fans at every level. I don't know whether Ryan is evolving or whether he's just been ground down by the situation at North End, as others before him have, and therefore is less bombastic in his press conferences and interactions with fans and more pragmatic because he's been stung in the past.
This season we have started the season off very well after a concerning pre-season, but ultimately we are only 3 games in to a 46 game season. My concern is not necessarily that Ryan is the problem, but rather come winter we don't have a proper striker, we'll have accrued a few injuries along the way and the long term injured (Riis, Ched & Ramsay) will still be out of contention. None of those issues are the fault of the manager.
