Is Lowe evolving?

Is Lowe evolving?

It’s been fairly well discussed on heee that we probably don’t have the bodies to play effectively with 4 at the back for any length of time but it’s nice to know that it’s an option.

I can’t think of many occasions when Lowe has attempted a shape-shift mid-game and it’s actually come off. Encouraging stuff.

I have literally never understood this argument. Of the top 12 in the division last season, only 3 played back threes regularly. It just goes to show that the vast, vast majority of teams and youth sides have played back fours, including the majority of teams these guys trained at. It doesn't make sense that they can't play in a back four. It's as good a fit as the 'back 5' is now if you count wing backs too (first choice is AMC Brad's Potts and a 17 year old - I like both of course, but the squad doesn't scream 'we fit a back 3 with wing backs' if they are the first names in).

Back four has never been properly tested and PNE fans have been led to believe it will instantly cause 5 goals to be conceded. So glad that wasn't the case.

As long as Lowe keeps the system working to the benefit of Mads and Browne we will potentially do really well.

The issue is changing the midfield to accomodate another striker, Cannon (if he signs) or Riis when he comes back.

You're looking at having to drop the Ledson position at the moment, but we'd all want Whiteman starting when he is available.

But then will Whiteman bring too much of a crab like passing to the centre of the pitch when he comes back fit.

We shipped 3,4+ goals in games last season with a back 5. Normally when overrun in midfield. Playing 4 at the back allows Whitman/ledson/ McCann to shore things up with 2 of those and build forward from there.

I would keep this shape and just flip flop Keane with another decent forward. The running that number 9 position is being asked to do is outrageous. Could just be subbing on 65 mins. I wouldn't go 2 up top, the midfield is finally working after years of confusion.

Rubbish. I don’t like his hair, I don’t like his voice, I don’t like his dress sense and you just need to look at him to know he’ll sell you a hot car and shag your wife. Scum. Sub human scum.
My wife wouldn't shag him, she has taste and a bit of class.

Still not creating enough. We've actually been quite clinical with the amount of real chances we've had.

For home games, we lose a midfielder when we have another available striking option for me, drop Keane a bit deeper.

Guess this kind of proves his point. Those top teams have the players to play a back four. I don’t think we do personally, not regularly anyway.

But could just push the attacking midfielders forward. I don't know if a back three really 'allows' a front two with our midfield. Even last season, the results started coming when Cannon was backed by two number 10's , with Parrott playing much deeper and supporting.

We will never create loads with a back three. It's just maths, too many players are devoted to defending the back.

Not really. These men didn't just spawn into footballers once Preston signed them, they've played it before.

There aren't really any defining characteristics of PNE defenders that mean they can't do it, hence why they didn't collapse when they switched Vs Swansea. I just don't get the argument.

It's like PNE fans view every other defender in the league as significantly better. I don't see that at all. You play a shape, you train in it, you work together and make it work.

Well, for starters we don’t have any specialistright back, we have one left back who is now a left sided centre half really and the remaining defenders either lack mobility (eg Lindsay) or dominance (eg Storey). Playing 3 at the back allows those weaknesses to be guarded slightly by weight of numbers, especially if the deep lying midfielder offers protection.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not exactly a great fan of 3 at the back either as we have the well documented wing back problems and it’s very much making the best of a bad job.

But they did against Sheff Utd last season. And Norwich at home last season.

A back four regularly with Storey and Lindsay at the heart of it is a recipe for disaster.

One noticeable difference is we are moving the ball quicker, not just long balls but also cross field to switch play, Browne has improved in this area. Not sure why but it’s great to see, last year at home we were too slow and predictable.

I agree Browne is best as a 10 but his pass when we should have done better but Keane and Holmes both went to the ball first half was something we haven’t seen much off

I was 50/50 on RL now I am genuinely excited

Keane is a far better player than Parrott so I'd be happy to see him in that deeper role where he did really well at Wigan last season.

Up front, Keane is doing the leg work and hold up play, but he doesn't have pace to play on the shoulder, or make those diagonal runs to catch defenders cold.

With a Cannon or Riis running beyond him, I think we would create far more, with Keane's flick ons and the wingbacks being able to play the ball into the channels more.

Who the first choice midfield would be when Whiteman is fit is another debate though. Maybe Lowe will be more open to a back four at times after Saturday.
