Matchday Thread - Derby v PNE (16/2/10)

I think it's just Mawene....
For example we kept 1 and a half clean sheets with him and Collins together, against the 2 best teams in the league, WBA and Newcastle.
Even with Chilvers and Mawene we were solid.
Mawene gets injured, SSL gets sold. We concede goals, people start to say the cause is SSL, however he is conceding 3-5 goals a game at M'Boro.
Mawene and SSL are paired together again and they are conceding few goals again.
Claude Davis was also exposed when he moved onto better things, without Mawene.

Am I just overreacting, or does Mawene make that much of a difference?

This a pathetic performance - to ship 5 yes FIVE after being one up and at two apiece is absolutely piss poor. You cannot talk up crap performances as per tonight / Barnsley / Swansea etc. This is relegation form and we are clueless at present. DF needs to ship out a large number of players and get his team together. But in the interim I am not sure that young kids are the immediate future - survival needs to be the target.

Why do people say 'we should not score 3 away from home and still lose'. Do they mean it's ok to score 3 at home and lose!!!!!!
One of those stupid cliches that people spout without thinking what they are saying!!!!

Not a stupid cliche that "PEOPLE SPOUT" with out thinking, through out football it is usual that a team palying away from home score fewer goals than they do playing at home.
Therefore when a team manages to score 3 away from home they should get some thing out of the game and not come away with nothing, teams on the whole playing away from home usually find it harder to score, so the CLICHE is not Spouted with out thinking !
😉

It is a crap cliche. Surely it is even worse to score 3 AT home and lose, as you are expected to concede less at home?

Contradiction there pal. You rightly say that teams score more goals at home, therefore why are you surprised when a HOME team scores more goals than the AWAY team, whether the away team scores 1,2 or even 3 goals like what happened tonight ????

Yes Mawene is very important for us. Unfortunately his knee problems mean that it is very difficult for him to play two games in a week without risking more damaging permanent injury. Irvine said this a while ago and Ferguson obviously concurs. Not much he can do about that.

Going to bed, just totally miffed we have lost when scoring 3 away from home when we didn't really trouble the Blackpool goal at home on Saturday.
Night Night
🙁

Think I'll take a week or two away from the forum. My head is buzzing with threads about what the problem is, what the solution is, how good AI was, how bad AI was, how good DF is, how bad DF is. Seems like we are going into self destruct mode as a team and as a bunch of fans; everyone seems to at each other's throats.

Off to hibernate and just sticking to the LEP and BBC Sport. Hopefully, some good will come out of the ashes of this inferno.

CYA.

Mellor

Mellor

Just a quick question 🙂
Is it in welbecks loan deal that he has to play every game?
Hes fast and works hard but I would rather mellor, or is mellor just not liked by ferguson? disapointed he (mells) didnt come on thenight or saturday thats all 🙂

The answer is simple, Welbeck is a good player, Mellor on the other hand is a prick.

Why all the hate for mellor? He does score goals fair enough he misses chances but he will still score more then any other of our strikers. Surely He at least should get some minutes not the 0 his been having lately.

Sounds like Ledley King to me with Youls knee(s). 🙁

Mellor flatters to deceive and is amongst North End's long list of passengers who require good players around them to make things happen.

Wallace is completely useless away from home, and despite spritely midfielders, away from home the new youngsters are always going to be out muscled.
Welbeck also is a luxury player who, perhaps, is not much use in the grind of an away performance. At least until North End can afford to play him in the presence of 10 others who want to work hard behind the ball.
Ferguson is trying to strike a balance in the team, between decent forward options - trying to score goals - which Irvine wasn't too interested in, without losing a defensive edge.
Were North End guilty of "switching off" last night?

These midweek away matches are difficult occasions. On the back of a local derby the players must have been a bit goosed into the second half. And it was a match that Derby were desperate to win to give them a sense of safety and a sniff of the play offs.
No excuses but this division is cruel if you drop your guard. No great tragedy ladt night. And they kept trying to score goals towards the end, which shows that the players are trying to show what they can do.
Admittedly, Irvine as defensive coach under Ferguson might have been a good formula.

Despite a leaky defence, I am delighted that Ferguson wants to concentrate on improving our attacking options for now. It is far more entertaining to watch.

Lonergan - not as good as Nash : still raw yet talented glovesman
Willams - new boy : first game away at Derby : time to bed in
Jones - currently plays like he's carrying a live hand grenade about to go off
Collins - runs like a crab but seen him play well
St Ledger - if I played against him I'd just wait for one if his many mistakes, exposes players around him : positionally naive : possbly central midfield option?
Sedgwick - passenger, dream opponent, fades terribly after 24 minutes
Coutts - lightweight away from home
James - lightweight away from home
Wallace - Passenger and lightweight away from home
Parkin - a joke footballer but done well recently
Welbeck - raw talent

With so many passengers, lightweights and luxuries, North End would struggle after giving it their all against a game scum team, playing in their self confessed "cup final". Had we played Plymouth at home before this away match we might not be as fatigued.

I think the key is to would play St.Ledger in a 3 man midfield, at the back of a midfield three. At least away from home. This allows some organised defenders to come in and do a steady job, with St.Ledge disrupting midfield surges which are currrently cutting us in two.
It will also give those players who prefer attacking the license to do so, without too much fear of being caught out of position. Not so much a defensive strategy, but a balance between covering the defence and freeing up the offence.

I would play St.Ledger in midfield, or at the back of a midfield diamond. At least away from home.

Thats quite specific do you time him ?

Quote from our manager !
"If you score three goals away from home you've got to expect to get something, to concede five goals at any level is absolute nonsense."
