Matchday Thread PNE v QPR - 1/12/23 - KO: 8PM - Championship

I went last night. Thought a win would set the weekend up, but it was properly dire.

We had 6 corners and they were pap. I don't have stats but we must have the lowest shot on target conversation rates from corners.

We have played the same way for some time now, no clear plan, no plan b. We missed Potts, there was no attack down the wings. No pace going forward, no one was up for it.

The kop was singing for the first 20 mins but you can't keep your spirits up in that weather and that performance and tbh the players weren't up for it either. Not looking forward to the next game for sure.

Can’t agree. If there was more smiling in the world (and by that I do not nean a laissez-faire attitude) the world would be a better place.

We should not pander to the sensitivities of abusive people.

Don't disagree with that but there's a time & a place for everything & IMHO that certainly isn't it.

It does make you wonder in training what do they actually work on , free kicks are awful corners we just tend to be pumped it into the same area where we hardly ever win a header even throw ins are usually passed straight back to the thrower who then either just hits it forward to nobody or passes it backwards.
How many times do you see any of our players turn with the ball and take an opposing player on ( hardly ever ) Throw ins and the kicks from Woodman take ages allowing the opposition to set their defence.
We haven’t got much pace but slowing everything down definitely doesn’t help either .

Eh? You mean sit and look even worse than us, then panic and bring on their one good player, who slaughters us? Odd plan, but okay.
It seemed to me that they had a perfectly planned tactic i.e get 10 behind the ball, go for a point and try and score on the break. Which they did. Twice.

For us, I couldn't see any sort of plan except pass sideways or backwards and try to give the ball away as often as possible.

North End have a limited number of players who belong in the top half of the Championship - Woodman, Whiteman, Browne, McCann, Hughes, Osmajic and Potts; the rest are skilled journeymen, able to contribute to a team performance but lacking the ability to change Championship games individually. (Mads has gifts but lacks the physicality to make a difference at this level)
Last night Whitman looked disinterested, Woodman lacking confidence, Browne, McCann and Hughes looking tentative on their way back to fitness and Osmajic and Potts missing.
The Management are charged with getting this collection (Lowe's squad) to compete and at present they don't seem to be able to lift the spirits of the team, and their changes of formation only seem to confuse the players so it is they who must carry the can. I believe that Mr Lowe wants us to succeed at Deepdale but he is not yet a genuine Championship manager, he is consistently out-tacticked by opposing managers.
Wholesale change is not necessary but the Manager needs help, maybe an experienced Director of football (maybe in place of Marsh but with more authority). My only anxiety is that Mr Lowe may lack the humility to respond to such advice.
"Out-tacticked" Great word and absolutely bang on. He has no idea. To be fair, I'm not sure I have either, but I'm not being paid £500k a year or whatever he's on. If he can't decide on his own, turn to his staff. Perhaps they've no idea either. In any event, it cannot carry on like this.

Too right. Ched for Captain, Browne can't seem to inspire anyone.
Captain needs to be someone who by and large is going to be playing not only from the off but also most of the games.
I'm (personally) not advocating it because other factors come into play (for me) but maybe a club Captain role if it was thought appropriate, definitely not the Team Captain as he isn't on the pitch for enough minutes.

Fair enough. Who would you go for?

Good question, there are no outstanding candidates.
Greg if he was to play more often but he's in the same boat as Ched in that respect.
Actually Browne has stepped up this Season, if the younger ones need a role model he at least leads by example.
Fair point, I think he's been better this season than last. That goal at Ewood gives him automatic legend status

I'm not taking digs. I agree he is and has been a PNE legend. But he's not a Captain. Just my view.
“Not a captain” is such a daft complaint

Evans is on the pitch, he’s not banned from inspiring his teammates just because he’s not captain. It’s only ever gets rolled out when we’re losing but no one can ever actually explain what Evans would do over Browne that he can’t do without the armband
