So Who Now ?

So Who Now ?

Interesting analysis - I always thought Billy's two biggest strengths were organisation and improving what he had, particularly in the fitness department. His record on transfers is pretty hit and miss when you look at his time with Derby and Forest in particular.

Aye, that's what I'm saying. He'll organise the shape and get them running marathons every game. But he's also spent a few quid (and did his best to while he was here) since leaving us, and never particularly wisely. In fact the time when I thought he had a decent team was the time Forest were failing to get up. But I suppose you can look at Forest now and think that maybe there're some bigger problems inside the club, and Billy was doing his best despite those issues.

For too long we've lost cheap late goals and been weak mentally, going all the way back to Simpson. At the very least, Billy can harden them up.

Wasn't that down to the ambitions of our board at the time? Year earlier sold our top goalscorer (Cresswell), our best winger went on a free (Lewis), that Summer we were about to sell Mears and Davis. How about when Nugent got injured in the run in, the best we could afford was Marcus Stewart from the league below.

I don't blame Davies for leaving us, he went to a club with more ambition and got them promoted. I didn't agree with how he left though. He could have left in a better way.
And can you explain why he did the same at derby and forest?

We're concerned with Preston, and how Shaw let him down.

We'd have been in the Prem if Shaw gave Davies half the backing he gave that imbecile Irvine.

I would imagine Davies would be happy to come back now that he wouldn't be dealing with that clueless fucker.

I got torn to pieces last time I quoted something from the guy I know who's high up at the club, but I feel it's a bit unfair when everyone's getting their hopes up about Davies returning when the info I've received suggests it's highly unlikely. Here's what My mate emailed me this morning. It's him that knows the guy at the club:

"My dads "contact" knows fuckall about who the new gaffer is but reckons we got rid of Brown because he cost too much and were selling Mellor, Hume and Coutts in January, assett stripping basically. Doesn't sound like the actions of a club about to give an ambitious demanding manager like Davies the job, they give it Alexander or unsworth and pay them fuckall for the opportunity".

Obviously, the guy doesn't know everything that goes on at the club at doesn't know whats said between Ridsdale and Hemmings in private so the above statement could be completely wrong, but just thought I'd pass this on.

ps before people start hurling abuse at me, I'm not claiming to be ITK and I'm not someone who loves to bad mouth the club's owners at any given opportunity. I'd love Davies to return but if the above is true it does seem highly improbable.

With all due respect, that doesn't make sense. Mr Hemmings knew how much PB cost in the first place so why hire him if the sole intention was to asset strip only to sack him and pay him for nothing whilst simultaneously paying for a new GA and DU to do the job. Why not just employ DU in the first place when he took charge before PB?

Good point. As I said could be complete tosh. Sometimes the contact gives us info that's spot e.g. he told us the morning Fegie Jnr was getting potted, but other times he doesn't seem to be in the loop at all.

Exactly and to say that Brown "was costing too much money" is daft, because Hemmings will still have to pay the rest of his contract up, so if anything it is costing him double, or treble if you include the spawn of Ferguson.

A bit confused here, first you say you know the guy (high up at the club), then it is your mate who has the contact but in the quoted e-mail he says that it is his dad's contact, chinese whispers ?

Reading the earlier post from Rankine8 my excitement of potentially getting Billy Davies back took a huge knock! Im hoping JK that your comment yesterday about hearing very VERY good things about Billy coming back come true! As in the past your posts have always been spot on and a good read!! I feel that he is the right man to get us back up his personality I dont think comes into it, if that was the case Phil Brown would be managing a top team in the Prem with his fancy talking!! I was reading also Bob Ross's comments and Big E's comment last night and they give the impression things look postive! Me personally fingers crossed!!

It's my mate's, Dad's best mate. My mate doesn't live in Preston anymore, so only see's the guy when he goes to the games. So the above quote means that he's rung his Dad and asked him to do some digging. I used to play 5-a-side with my mate, his Dad and the contact, so saw the contact every week. But since moving away from Preston myself I now only see the contact about once a year when my mate's family has a do. But when I see him I always have a chat personally because I used to see him every week. So I do know him, but hardly ever see him myself.

Sorry, this sounds even more confusing. Not Chinese wispers though the contact will have said the above, I just wouldn't be so sure that he knows everything Hemmings/Ridsdale are planning. He used to be a lot more involved when Shaw was at the helm but says he hardly ever see's Hemmings personally.

What's really frustrating is that my missus works with Julian Derby's missus at a school in Bolton. I've begged her to do some digging but she won't do it!!! So annoying! Imagine if him and BD we're actually returning I could stick my life savings on it!!

Could you perhaps suggest to Mrs Derby that her husband might like to find a different job were BD to be appointed at Deepdale and for her to have a similar chat with Mrs Kelly? lol

haha... there'd be no point - my missus is being a complete wuss. Won't say anything to her about the situation. I even tried to entice her by saying your only chance of getting a decent holiday next year is if you find out the info and we win some money on it. She still won't budge!

We are now in the same situation as every other club who looked to appoint a manager. We have 3 choices.

Choice 1 = Appoint someone who has been sacked in the past for doing the job poorley
Choice 2 = Appoint someone who has never done the job before
Choice 3 = Appoint someone who is currently doing the job well at another club

The general view at the moment is that we have enough good players in the existing squad to make the play-offs - but they need to be motivated. play as a team and get players in their best position and playing to a game plan. Considering this and the fact that we need to limit (or reduce) the money we are spending, then an Alexander/Unsworth appointment would seem to be the likely outcome. If we get a result on Saturday, then 2 wins over Christmas then the decision effectively makes it's self

Agree with this ^^, but I hope one of Unsworth or Alexander 'take the reins' as it were, and the other acts as a hands-on assistant, like Horton did for Brown (but better). I dont want any of this 2 managers rubbish like Liverpool tried with Houllier and Evans.

I would like Steve Bruce but it isn't going to happen, Dave Jones is a possible given the Ridsdale\Cardiff connection, but he's another one who failed to get promotion to the top flight despite sound backing, O'Driscoll maybe as I do think he punched above his weight at Doncaster.

I don't think we can take a risk on Unsworth right now, we need somebody with experience, but who the f#$k knows really, as we seem to go through managers like nobodys business and they all seem to implode within 12 months of arriving at Deepdale.

I know that these bookies' odds are all over the place...

But all day yesterday, Sean O'Driscol was 14/1 with skybet

He's now 3/1 (a bit shorter, at 5/2 with Stan James)

Think SOD would be a great appointment. Davies won't come here, he'll be loving the hero worship he's receiving on here, as he did the last time we had a vacancy.

BD might even get to the talks stage but he'll just string us along, no way he'll go for Trev's current way of running things. Even if by some miracle, he was appointed, he'd be off like a shot as soon as something better came along.

That's another reason SOD would be good for us, seem to remember him staying loyal to Donny when bigger jobs were offered. A loyal, principled man who gets his team playing in the right way...if only!

So for Christ's sake, can everybody please remove their tongues from down the back of Billy's trousers, 'cos he ain't coming! OK?

Cheers

O'Driscoll has a 36% career win percentage which, whilst better than Brown, is between Les Chapman and John Beck. Is this guy really the saviour he is made out to be?
