Matchday Thread Southampton v PNE - 16/04/24 - KO:8PM - Championship

Don't blame you! I was just curious to see the body language if anything. Browne stayed around the longest. Brady was there for a while. Lowe applauded from the back (always seems to do this when we loses but will be right at the front if we win).

Lindsay and Keane gave their shirts to the crowd.

Worst thing for me was Storey (who I’m a big fan of) laughing and waving to friends/family in the away end.

No-one could be arsed to give him stick for it, but it struck me as a bit off after a performance like that. 😤

Summed up the players’ attitude on the night though. 💩

Not a single corner all game, that's worrying.

It is.

But then again I was listening to the PNE Weekly podcast on the way down and Steve Eyre (a great listen btw) was saying we are in the bottom three of goals from set plays in the Championship.

So whether get one or not, our only tactic is usually ‘put it in the mixer and hope for the best’. And it rarely works.

#ScouseWestley 🙄

Lack of RWB cover so obvious, no McCann, Whiteman, haven'y scored in three of the last four games, we are sorely lacking in depth but they played a style of football that we are a million miles away from.
One thing that hasn't changed though is Martin is still a knob

My patience with him is done.

There will be no plan B whilst this fixation with wing backs remains. It works, occasionally but long term, no chance. We have struggled to get in a first choice wing back and we literally have no player, in reserve, that can play that position.

this is the championship, not Europe or the prem, were a lower financed fish in the championship so unless and until Lowe realises that his obsession doesnt work we will continue to plod along as the archetypal mid table team.

The last 2 seasons, with the odd exception, have been devoid of excitement and entertainment for the paying supporters. I suspect that the straw is about to break the camels back with the fans.

Heres the reality.

PNE, my club, the club ive supported for nearly 60 years are more boring now than at any point in the time Ive watched them.

Well done Lowe, youve achieved, with me, what even Docherty, Ferguson and Westley didnt manage, driven me away, I suspect Im not alone.
Great post @raefil.

The word I found myself using constantly as I was mumbling to myself is dis, we looked disinterested, disorganised, easily distracted and in total disarray. I know some will disagree with me and dismiss my comments but it’s something I’m going to discuss.

This wingback situation is a #uc#*+g joke. RL seems intent on using it at any cost. Potts is the only player, sometimes Browne who have shown signs of adapting to the role. I have nothing against Holmes, and he’s not the first player to down tools when played in that position. We know Seary can’t be ready for regular Championship football, but can anyone seriously believe he’d have been as poor as Holmes was last night. Holmes has been a decent squad signing, but last night is a nightmare for him to forget, but the Manager has to take the bulk of the blame imo. The only credit I’ll give RL is that he did react, and took him off early. If RL clearly doesn’t rate Seary, then why is he on the bench?

Another season done and dusted. Let’s see what happens in the summer. So, to finish so near to the playoffs despite being the worst team in the division for nearly a half of it, just illustrates what a missed opportunity this season has been.

Southampton squad £170m we had 5 first choice players unavailable, the result was inevitable
This is what I’m saying though?
What so Man City first 2.8B
Man Utd 2nd 2.4B
Liverpool 3rd 2.2B
Or whatever it is.
The league table doesn’t just end up to how much money you’ve spent. If you play good tactics and actually work out how to counteract the team you’re playing. You might get something? Every tactical decision played into saints favour. Poor management. Sums him up really. The only thing you can say is that some good signings have been made.. then you question iftthey we’re even lowes

A fascinating exercise would be to name the player, his best playing position and where Lowe is actually playing.
Woodman . Keeper, protected by him being a specialist but I’d be careful if I was him in pick up five a sides where all goalkeepers think they are strikers. God help hi if he scored a bagful he’d find himself up front the following week.
Lindsey : untouchable as the CB. But under virtually no pressure to improve
Storey : a CB ..won’t ever play anywhere else and been treated kindly by Lowe
Hughes : truly a left full back but doing a stealers wheel , “stuck in the middle with Hughes” how much more comfortable would he be as a full back period .
Cunningham forwards backwards sideways down but made it tothe premier league as a full back
Whatmough : a centre back, sadly for him he must have twinkled in training messing around in midfield. ( in his defence he is actually quite a skilful player and if we ever try to play it out from the back….
Potts ..poor Potts ..came here as an attacking midfielder . Box to box , huge motor huge heart , scored some late arrival the box goals. Now shifted and shafted to play forever out of position dreaming one day of a return to his natural position.

I could go on…the great wing back shuffle ..Best, Browne , McCann , Brady , Potts, Ledson… feel free to add tothe Ryan Lowe shuffle ..pick a player any player and play him anywhere but the right place

Most teams at our size of club try to have 2 players for each position . When both those players get injured or suspended then you have to juggle your players and possibly alter tactics/ formations. Whiteman was injured and then his replacement Ledson was also out. McCann came in and started really well before also getting crocked and skipper Browne the same. So which pairing are we going to have in centre midfield? The choices are Woodburn, Mawene, Brady, Holmes or surplus defender Whatmough. Any 2 of those. Any manager would have struggled to get a winning combination from those. Not helped by the fact that the front 3 couldn’t hold the ball up once which resulted in us being under the cosh constantly.

A fascinating exercise, but it starts at the top for me. Ridsdale is a 🦕 and is not up to the job. He has been at the club far too long and we’ve not threatened success whilst he’s been here. We need new blood with up to date ideas imho.
Ryan Lowe is also out of position. He isn’t clever enough to be the main man. He could do a decent job as an assistant somewhere else I’m sure.

A performance to forget.
When we look poor we look like a team that should be playing at a much lower level.
In the 7 games we have played against the top 4 we have conceded 17 goals though to be fair we have won 2 of them.
They showed themselves in a terrible light last night though.

None of any front 3 who plays ever holds the ball up that's why we are constantly under the cost no matter who we play .

So you think Rotherham should be leading the championship with the three quid they spent

Fair play to the players giving the shirts to the fans who travelled a long way for nothing. Fully get you're point it looks like the players don't give a shit if there laughing etc at end of a game like yesterday.

We also had zero corners at Birmingham - in fact it was a cornerless match!
Funnily enough the stats/chances of getting a goal from a corner are virtually zero. Lineker was talking recently about his move to Spain back in the 80's and one of the differences he immediately noticed is that there was virtually zero crowd reaction when a corner was given
