What are the 'essential criteria' for the Preston manager role?

What are the 'essential criteria' for the Preston manager role?

Same question to number three. Why? What is it about his style, tactics, managerial skill? Are there any other managers which have these qualities? How would you select a new manager?

A manager who first of all can make a team hard to beat. A manager who can make his team fight for the shirt, who show fighting spirit at all times. A manager who can get their team playing in a style that makes the fans feel superior to others, hence creating an incredible atmosphere at home and away games. Billy Davies has done this at every club he has managed.

Yet still there are people on here (PNERULEOK, yeah you! 😀) who don't get it.

Sigh!

To me essential criteria has to include good man management skills and the ability to coach players into a unit that is far better than the individual players would suggest - something the guy down at the end of the M55 has shown in abundance.
However to me the new manager has to have faith in playing football on the ground and have the tactical ability to have at least three of four different formations/styles that work - a great deal of fluidity is needed in the modern game.
When it comes to BD - sure he did a good job at North End but let's also remember that at Derby & Forest the guy had a massive wage bill to play with and that counts for a lot in today's game at Championship level. When he did get to the Prem then I personally think his tactical limitations were truly exposed by coaches of the opposition.

The new manager has to be able to WORK WITH the new chairman of football to bring us success for the fans and owner.

Under normal circumstances, this would indeed be the key criteria. However, many suspect that TH's key brief to PR is to sell the club to anyone who'll buy it at for a reasonable sum, so they can both bugger off somewhere more salubrious, like a yacht moored in Monte Carlo. Such an aim, if it's the case, throws a wide range of variables into their choice of next manager.

He had what?, 11 games of a 38 game season, not even a 1/3 of that season.

Give your head a wobble.

a good coach hits the ground running by having in their locker the means to beat the opposition - that's why Moyes is so highly thought of, when he hit the new division he did not need 11 games and more to understand what was needed at the next level. If BD is so good he ought to have been winning more in the Prem - you ask Derby fans and they will tell you it was men against boys out there, he could not prepare the team to get close to the opposition at that level - and instead it was embarrassing that he was so far off the mark. BD is a good manager at a certain level but is incapable of making the next step up and that is what we (or anyone else) needs in answer to the original post.

He is an excellent Championship manager. We are a League 1 side, we should be delighted with a manager with his on field track record.

What Billy Davies did at Derby was to secure promotion to quickly!!! It was the club that was not ready for the prtemiership.

i really hate to say this but Derby vs Seasidescum - which of those two looked more ready for the Prem? I appreciate that Derby may have been found wanting in some areas but they ought to have been far far closer. As stated - he's a good manager at a certain level but he's not the messiah, he's a very naughty boy! He does not possess the long-term criteria that we ought to be looking for at this stage.

So in your eyes, he's good enough by far for The Championship, yet not good enough for the level below????

Give your head a wobble as well!!

Expectations, maybe. Facilities, definitely. But squad wise, no. Derby looked in dire straits before Billy came in and had a few seasons of relegation scares whereas Blackpool were achieving a lower mid-table finish before Hollowhead. Also with higher expectations, comes more pressure but Billy has learnt to deal with it, whereas some managers (Holloway even) have cracked under it at bigger clubs. There would be a lot of pressure here to get out of this division. This is exactly why Billy is our best candidate at the present time. Moyes took us over with less expectations and Holloway likewise with Blackpool. Even O'Driscoll only managed a small club in Doncaster, who realistically only had to survive each year in the Championship. Billy is one (if not the only) candidate who has survived and even thrived under these conditions before, so I'd be most confident in him doing it again...

It's a messageboard, and about opinions. Mine is that he'd flatter to deceive, maybe for a while and at great expense, and then be quite happy if we had to do an Aldershot or Wimbledon to even think of this level again. He expressed such loyalty to Pa Broun, but despite being unemployed, appears not to have been offered a job of any kind at Aberdeen.
The Poison Dwarf did not earn that moniker without good reason.
It would "All come out out in my book". What effin' book? He's had pleanty of gardening leave to write it, but I see no shoots springing up yet.
BD is an arse.

Actually I'd like a manager.. who you can see steadily builds the squad by wheeling and dealing and can work with a severevly restricted budget by finding bargain players and bringing on the youth. Not sure BD fits the above.. he's always had money to spend and our lack of funds is something he has no track record of dealing with.

I wonder if Moyesy would be interested ? 😉

A proven track record with three different clubs in achieving the current chairman’s aspiration for PNE, that is for PNE to be a club challenging for promotion to the Premiership.

There are a minority who cannot forgive or forget. They are consumed by poison and hatred. Since Beck, we have had three outstanding managers all of whom I would welcome back with open arms.

Peters. Sacked

Moyes. Who applied for the Everton job whilst still our manager.

Davies. Walked because he felt he wasn't being backed.

I am not one in 'cannot forgive or forget' camp. I think we are all agreed that we need promotion back to the Championship asap and there are probably a handful of candidates who you could argue could get us out of div1. But I am looking further down the line, much like those at Norwich probably did in getting a manager who can take them through the Championship and up into the Prem and then hold their own. To that end only Moyes would get my seal of approval - all the rest remain unproven or in the case of Davies - got there and was found wanting.
