What's wrong tactically?

What's wrong tactically?

Seems pretty simple to me . Crosses aren't working . So play down the middle . If it isn't working it's because we aren't training correctly.

Our forwards not being able head the ball is a trait of theirs that you can't train.

Midfielders such as devine , dobbin, lang, and whiteman should be able to work in tight spaces and put ball in behind for the forwards to latch onto .

It's a lot more difficult to just dink it around in the middle when they're playing a low block and a compact shape out of possession, leaving no space to work with.

The team with possession has to find space, and to do that you need to stretch them by using the flanks.

I thought a good exercise would be to play manager for a min. And say in a sentence what you think the main issue is ON THE PITCH at the moment . We know this squad can produce results . So what needs to change ? I'll start:

Need to play more down the middle . We put dozens of crosses into to strikers that want it on the floor.
We don't have a midfielder with the ability to play s forward pass ket alone the flair and vision required...we have one more suited to league 1 at best....and how does the one footed Thompson actually earn a living playing football...whoever opted to sign him should be sacked for gross misconduct

But Hetfield, there are 11 opposition players on the pitch. If you try and force everything down the middle, especially on a pitch as shit as ours, it isn't going to go well.

Our goal last night came from a fantastic cross and a great header. Going further back, our goal at Swansea came from a cross. Our first goal against Watford was from a cross of sorts.

Yes - but again - you can't put the ball in behind if there is no space behind. That is what our strength is, and what opposition managers identify. Dobbin / Devine in pockets, and then getting in behind the opposition's defence.

My biggest issue isn’t the general tactics, which as others have said is as much dependent on factors like the pitch and opposition. It’s how we use certain players

My feelings on Small are well documented and how using him as a wingback isn’t getting the best out of him.

Then take the strikers. I know Smith has been a huge disappointment, but there’s an issue with the way we use him too. Rather than use him as a focal point to hit and surround him with technical players to lay it off to, it feels like we use him as if we’ve got Jebbison up front. High pressing, counter attacking, balls over the top, or as part of a front two where we ask our forwards to run the channels. That’s never going to work.
Then when we use Osmajic, we seem to launch the ball forward and ask him to win headers when he would be better suited to the way we’re playing with Smith.

The other is Devine. Since Armstrong has left, we seem to have used Devine to do the ball-carrying and driving forward that Armstrong was doing. Which, whilst a shame because it knobbles him attacking wise, is fine because we’ve got to try and find somebody to do that role. But the issue is the third midfielder is either McCann or Thompson. So if Devine is doing Armstrong’s work, McCann or Thompson is doing Devine’s attacking work which is obviously never going to work. Why not use someone like Moran to contribute to the attacks like Devine was doing and give us a bit of balance? There doesn’t seem to be any attempt to regain the shape that found us success early on.

That’s a big reason for my frustrations. It feels like he can’t get the best out of the squad, when there’s some reasonably simple changes that might help.

Of course tactics are important, along with knowledge of the opposition's strengths and weaknesses and how they set up, and our players playing to a system they know and trust and in positions they are comfortable with. To that end, if we want to play 4-2-3-1 we need proper full backs, and 2 players from the 3 who can play wide and also cut in. That is where the experiment failed last night.

But tactics are over estimated. A lot of football matches are won in players' heads. This is not too much different to the team that was playing confident, attacking and exciting football in the early part of the season. Even without Armstrong. They have just lost that confidence. Dai has not done much wrong but I do think losing Iverson was an absolutely massive blow to team confidence.

Serious lack of creativity that unfortunately we will never accomplish with this poor quality of players that’s been assembled over many many seasons. Thank you the Hemmings clan and Ridsdale.

Creativity cost money which our owners won’t commit too so we stuck with loans or at best a Lang or Small type player where one has injury problems and another young and inconsistent

That’s exactly what I’m saying, they have slowly and steadily ground us down with their cheap shit investment.

Lack of investment, players need to take some responsibility, PLUS you have to question what the coaching staff are doing all week.

Tactically, we are just shit! There are too many players who just aren’t good enough on the ball, Christ, some can’t even pass the ball back from a throw in. Midfielders rarely offer themselves for the ball and when they do they do fack all with it. It’s going to take one hell of a manager to get anything positive out of this lot. We need a good clear out, but it’s not going to happen. I’m sure I’ve done something awful in a past life to end up supporting this shower !!

Last night:
- no overlapping full backs, meant Dobbin and Lang could easily be stopped out wide.
- Thompson and Whiteman both wanted to play very deep leaving Devine exposed to carry the ball (would have brought Moran on for Thompson at HT)
- not taking Gibson off sooner
- the sheer stupidity of making 1 sub on our 3rd break in play when we could have brought on Moran and/or Smith too.
- Playing Jebbison out wide when Lang came off

In general:
- the ownership
- shocking set pieces
- a manager who had decided to make strange decisions. Has he thrown his toys out the pram due to the pitch and January? His sulking has increased of late
- blaming the pitch and say we have had to change how we play (other teams haven't changed their approach at Deepdale - plus it doesnt explain our away form)
- over reliance on 1 system (saying we have no wingers due to cash - hardly motivating before lining up with them and Oxford who we could arguably pay smaller wages than us, played with wingers)
- Iversen is a big miss, Cornell hasn't done too bad but several of the recent goals in look at and think yeah Iversen would save that (have we only won 1 game with Cornell in the sticks)
- Lack of concentration in the latter stages of games.
- unable to string 2 decent halves together
- etc.

I thought this when I saw the team. It's U7 football coaching level basic shite that Oxford would be compact so having zero width on the pitch until the last five, yeah nice one there Paul mate.

Durutti, 53, no badges, Higher Walton.

It was very clear when we played it under AN that having Fisher available to overlap or underlap always made the team look better.

And the lack of a great option on the left was telling, with all due respect to Hughes as a full back.

For me the biggest issue isn’t the formation at all, but how predictable we are in possession. There are two teams in every game and quite often, as passionate fans, we forget that. If a team wants to play out using a back 3, two things need to be in play. The two wide centre backs need to be comfortable on the ball. Second thing is that the CDM needs to be happy receiving the ball under pressure. We only had one such CDM but he wasn’t in the team so we sold him. Whiteman doesn’t like getting the ball when marked and that makes us very predictable.
