Ledson isn't exactly quick or the best tackler. No reason Whiteman can't play there just as well, if not better, despite being a different profile of midfielder.
Just because Ledson is aggressive, doesn't mean we need an aggressive player in that position.
Ledson drops out anyway for me and Potts moves into midfield with KKH back to RWB when Porteous is back.

Still got three years left on his deal?

Wonder if he'll be offered to others on season loan as he's been poor this season and plenty of options for midfield currently especially if Ledson gets an extension.

I was wondering where the ball might have ended up if Whiteman found himself in the same position as Thor before the pass for the third? Answer: Back to the keeper or a defender.

There was a game under Lowe (I think) where McCann was the holding midfielder and Whiteman played more in a more advanced role. At the time we thought Ben did ok.

Hecky needs to find a new role for him. Ledson, McCann and Thor (obviously) all ahead of him in that deeper role.

implying he's been worse than Ledson ??? yeh right

I wouldn't give Ledson an extension but he's playing most weeks so that kind of indicates which way the wind is blowing especially as big earners like Woodman and Riis are leaving.

I'm actually a fan of Whiteman but he has been terrible this season. Giving him the captaincy has really impacted his game so logical move now is just to appoint it to Gibson in the summer and let him concentrate on trying to find form again.

I have been frustrated by Whiteman's inability to pass forward and play at pace. It always seemed our most ponderous performances came when he was on the pitch.

But I just wanted to even things up.

I have seen a change in recent games.

And it feels lazy to keep on peddling the 'passes backwards and slows the game down' story.

Is he a passing visionary who pings the ball around at pace?

No.

But he is way better than he was when doing the 'keep it tight' job Ryan Lowe asked him to do? Absolutely.

He was solid against Leeds. The shot from the set piece was decent.

Then there was a passage of play in the second half where he put in a thundering challenge, injuring himself, and while still limping from the effects, put in another carbon copy challenge, which he won too. If those back-to-back challenges were at home, people would have been standing up and applauding.

He is passing forward at least as much as he passes back. Progress! They don't always come off. But there is intent there in a way there never was.

He also crops up further up the pitch more often instead of clinging to the back three like a security blanket (in the dark Lowe days).

I used to dread seeing him in the starting line-up.

But not any more. And credit where it is due for showing more offensive desire and intent.

I thought against Cardiff, even though he was poor, he was trying to progress the ball at every opportunity. He gave the ball away a few times, but also found players in pockets of space, and it's the most cohesive we've looked as an attacking outfit for a long time.

His effort is always good, always puts in some big tackles. If he could move he'd be a half decent defensive midfielder.

I still think he's miles off his best, but hopefully that was a little hint as to how we'll be trying to use him going forward. Needs an injury free off-season, get back on the weights and improve his fitness.

Been poor for a long time, but he's here for the long haul. At his best he is a real asset to the team

There's no way we get rid this summer with his ridiculous contract so guess it's one that Hecky etc have to focus on how best to utilise him and, hopefully, improve his game.

I don't know if I watched a different game to everyone else but I thought he was crap. To make sure I'm not going mad, I asked someone who I brought to the game who isn't a Preston fan and they said they thought he was the worst player on the pitch

I think this is a big part of the problem; he was never quick, but that injury robbed him of even more mobility - hence the 10 yellows, often for pulling back an opponent who's nipped past him.

I agree that at his best he can be an asset, but it's been 12 months+ since that was the case. How long do we give it?

He is probably our most frustrating player and unfortunately, as captain, his ho-hum-middle-of-the-road performances epitomise this entire squad.

They can all be decent on their day, but those days don't come round often enough.

Will it be the same again next season?

Nothing changes if nothing changes. 🙃

Yeah, I thought he was poor too but I'm not sure anyone is genuinely saying he was great.

'Solid' is the word Jumping Mouse used.

BW's levels have dropped off so much, even that (debatable) shout is seen as progress.

As everyone knows, unless the club subsidises a move (which they won't), then he's here for the foreseeable. 🙄

Either he gets back to what he once was or he becomes a peripheral Bauer-esque figure in the background (ie. only here because Ridsdale cocked up his contract).

Unless he improves dramatically, if he's a first choice in August it would be a worrying sign.

He did put in the slide tackles midway through the second half but he wasn’t much different to how he normally is in my opinion. Compare and contrast how he plays when he receives the ball from the goalkeeper to how Thordarson handles it. Thordarson knows where his team mates are and often lays it off first time if under pressure to a team mate in a better position and moves to be an option for the return pass - he did this several times on Saturday. Whiteman simply doesn’t do that.

He was trying to keep the ball moving quickly on Saturday but without any real success. The manager has to recognise Thordarson’s best position and play him there and play around him with the others instead of making others fit in around Whiteman.

I agree he is trying to pass forward more, which is needed and welcome.

Now if he can work on introducing himself to the rest of his foot so he can stop side footing everything he could really kick on.

Are we really applauding someone on upwards of 15k p/w for having a 'decent shot'? That’s really clutching at straws.

This post sums up where we are as a club in just accepting mediocracy.

His stats may show he passes forward but mainly because he's sat on the defenders toenails and passing it at a 10 degree angle to the right wing back who is 2 yards further forward than him . His set pieces are consistently poor and his goals and assists since he joined the club are next to none.

I just don't see what he offers and if PH wants to play the football he says he does I just don't think he fits into the team - of course he will be in the team though because he's been given a long contract on big wages and made club captain.
