I have been frustrated by Whiteman's inability to pass forward and play at pace. It always seemed our most ponderous performances came when he was on the pitch.
But I just wanted to even things up.
I have seen a change in recent games.
And it feels lazy to keep on peddling the 'passes backwards and slows the game down' story.
Is he a passing visionary who pings the ball around at pace?
No.
But he is way better than he was when doing the 'keep it tight' job Ryan Lowe asked him to do? Absolutely.
He was solid against Leeds. The shot from the set piece was decent.
Then there was a passage of play in the second half where he put in a thundering challenge, injuring himself, and while still limping from the effects, put in another carbon copy challenge, which he won too. If those back-to-back challenges were at home, people would have been standing up and applauding.
He is passing forward at least as much as he passes back. Progress! They don't always come off. But there is intent there in a way there never was.
He also crops up further up the pitch more often instead of clinging to the back three like a security blanket (in the dark Lowe days).
I used to dread seeing him in the starting line-up.
But not any more. And credit where it is due for showing more offensive desire and intent.
