Work issues

Work issues

One year on and things came to a head again this morning which resulted in losing my shit and having a meltdown.
Came as a result of something trivial (arguments over the heating) and ended up with me swearing quite loudly at who I was arguing with (a surprise to people at work but shouldn't come as a surprise to people on here!).
Ended up having a meltdown and saying I was quitting - came to my senses when I sat in my car though.

Had a meeting to sort things out and we both apologised to each other so as far as that's concerned, it's water under the bridge as my outburst and meltdown was a result of an accumulation of issues.

However, it's convinced me even more that I don't see my long term future at the company and I really need to consider my mental health as I feel it's being damaged. Seriously considering getting signed off if I can as I feel myself edging towards a breakdown.

Came close to leaving last year but stayed on and decided to do an NVQ in customer service (which I'm currently smashing - 44% over my expected progress and a distinction grade in every module/unit where it was possible) so hopefully that will stand me in good stead going forward.

I realise I'm not asking anything in this post but needed somewhere to vent.

No worries. That's why we're here.

Piss on the lot of them! Bloody wankers!
😉

Wish you all the very best for a positive future, Gaz 👍

Don't get a job in customer services at a heating company, but on a serious note put your own health first, that's what I tell everyone I look after.

Even a short break may be helpful, Gaz. sometimes its good to just remove ourselves from a situation.

I'm seriously considering it. Think you can request a 'FIT' (sick) note from the doctors via the NHS app which I may just do.

I think today was a new low. I apologised and so did the guy I had an argument with - water under the bridge as far as we were concerned, but his line manager didn't seem quite as forgiving. I got the impression he wanted to take it further (investigation and all that) but had quite clearly been slapped down by HR (to be fair, he's always been a knob anyway).

My own line manager, the receptionist and the lady from HR have been a huge support and I've also had a fantastic message from another work colleague.

I know it will leave my close work colleagues in the lurch but I need a break from the stress and toxicity.

Take care of yourself Gaz , I think a break might be a great idea as @raefil has suggested.

I've been there and left my job in the end. I told a senior guy who thought he should be my boss but wasn't to fuck off. It was all down to politics the level above me and I decided it wasn't worth the stress. It only took me two months to get another job so I felt vindicated in the end.

In situations like yours, you need to look after yourself and stay healthy.

Don’t wait til you are at the end of your tether, though it sounds like you maybe already, get signed off. Have as long as you need and take the time to think things through.
Take care of yourself and look after your own well-being.

I’d take some time away, say a month, see how you feel. If it’s the same, it’s time to leave. I don’t hate my job, have great colleagues, but for the past 12 months things have changed so much and so fast, I don’t think I can be arsed with it all and have been wrestling with retiring.

Good luck whatever you decide and look after yourself.

Sounds like you need an escapism from this very difficult situation. It does seem like you need some time away from the work place and a fresh start somewhere else.

Much of what you describe comes across as someone who is under a great amount of pressure and this is something that can really chip away at you over time.

It's not easy but you can't keep putting yourself through this situation again and again.

One thing that GP’s are really well trained and experienced in is your situation, get yourself an appointment ASAP my friend, you aren’t on your own in how you feel albeit pretty much everyone who is enduring such issues feels it, we could fill a good few football fields I imagine if we tried of fellow people in the same boat.
Another option is counselling, something we often associate with everyone and anyone other than ourselves when it comes to mental health, if you have any access at all then reach out, it will help.

I think if things have really come to a head then getting signed off for a month might be the best option.

You said earlier in the thread that you could work from home, is that still an option and would doing that for a few weeks help? if you are out of the office environment.

Something I've always found and it might just be me, but it's always seemed easier to get another job when I'm in a job. Last time I was out of work and granted it was during Covid, but the weeks out of work pass in the blink of an eye. You start chasing opportunities on Monday and before you know it it's Friday again. Just something to consider. Now while you're at work or even if you do get signed off just start putting the feelers out to see what other work is out there for you. Something unexpected might just peak your interest and give you the lift that you need professionally.

Find work when in work. Very good advice

I may just ask if I can work from home for a couple of days a week for a couple of weeks at least. I do have some annual leave left - some already booked for December and I have a few days planned in a few weeks too.

I've also got my annual appraisal due so I will have a few 'honest' things to say in that although my line manager already knows how unhappy I've been.
Changing job isn't an option at the moment due to my NVQ but I'm that far ahead it looks like I'll be finishing that 3 months early (I'm that far ahead I've had to slow down). Sooner it's over and I've gained that qualification, it'll be down to sprucing up everything - CV, LinkedIn etc and hopefully seeing what's out there.
