Cup Matches - Your favourite memories

Cup Matches - Your favourite memories

Stil one of my fondest memories and in all my lifetime the only real giantkilling we pulled off.

http://www.britishpathe.com/video/fa-cup-5th-round-preston-in-last-eight

Too young to remember this, but my Dad was at the game, great to see the footage though.
We did beat Derby at Deepdale in the 3rd Round of the Cup 3-0 16th Jan 1979, Tommy Docherty was their manager, they were in the 1st Division and I think we had just been promoted to the old 2nd Division. Super Bruce x 2 and Frannny Burns x 1 scored for North End, attendance 19,901.
Nearly 20,000 at Deepdale for a night match, great atmosphere and I think could be classed as a "Giant Killing. " 😀

Yes, what a wonderful experience that was, and we were surrounded by a full house I recall. However the Trades Descriptions Act was obviously infringed, when the commentary mentions: "and Spavin shoots"....That phrase is up there, top of the list of the most unlikely true phrases possible, probably beating into second place the present day's mutterings of our manager alleging: "we battered them".

I remember this, standing on the town end. Brilliant game, it gets my vote.

Middlesbrough 0 PNE 1 Ayresome Pk without a doubt for me. Rock hard pitch no way would that game have been played today, unless the players were wrapped in cotton wool .... bless.

The game after vs Newcastle was also a great day out, the sight of all those coaches still sticks in the memory .... happy days.

North End 3 Forest 0. 1969 ish ? Temple 2 and Irvine I think. My favourite cup game of all time. They were 1st div , we 2nd div. All that if my memory serves me right.

Great day, "Rocket Ronnie " the walk back to the car was a little scary though ! 😉

A bit too early this game for me, 4th January 1969, PNE 3-0 Notts Forest, Irvine x 2, one a Pen and Temple the other, attendance 20,008.
We drew Chelsea in the next round, 0-0 at Deepdale infront of 31,875, before getting beat in the replay at Stamford Bridge 2-1 infront of 36,522, Ingram scoring for North End.

Thanks for that. Remember Temples goal in the town end , solo run through the heart of the defence ,( Terry Hennessy etc) round the keeper and in you go ! Crowd went mad !

Nottingham Forest @ Home 1969ish - won 3-0

I remember the GOLD programmes that North End used to produce for FA Cup matches..

I used to have 3 in my collection - Nottm Forest, Derby and Chelsea......

I went, but we were beat before the kick off. The full extent of Fuller's knee unjury became apparent earlier in the day and the whole thing was flat, the team, the supporters and the performance.

+1. We were travelling down with the Chief Exec at the time, and he broke the news to us in the car on the motorway. Performance was pretty much like I expected. Healy was playing up front on his own if I remember rightly.

Preston vs. Liverpool for me (only been going since 2001).

I know it ended in defeat, but my Dad and family in general are Liverpool fans. We all sat in the AKTE and by the end of it they wanted PNE to win. Most of them now refer to Parkin as "that fat thug who dragged our keeper to the ground".

No cup match can top that unless we meet them again further in the competition.

I watched the footage posted by Raf , when we beat Spurs at Home in 1966, from the bit shown it did not look like we had what you could call our end ? I thought the KOP was the North End, end of the ground at this time, but there seemed a good mixture of North Enders and Spurs fans on both the Kop and Town End ?
Was this the norm, I am just a bit to young to remember these games, my first game on North End was in 1973, still remember the game though. 🙂

Was that when the floodlights failed?

Fans mingling together was the norm, back then. The banter was great and never a hint of trouble.

Not an FA Cup game but a League Cup game, 10th September 1974, we were in the 3rd Division and beat Sunderland from Division 2, who had won the FA Cup in 1973, 2-0 at home.
Another night match, great atmposphere, Tony Morley and a Bobby Charlton scoring for North End Witnessed by 13,279, with a big following from Sunderland filling the Town End.
Great way for a young lad to celebrate his Birthday ! 😀

The floodlight failure was the week before, Chelsea leading 2-0 at the time with over 44,000 in the ground, the game had to be re-arranged and we then lost 2-1.
Your post was my favorite as well ,still got my gold progs and ticket stubs, and to this day I still have bad flash backs of those two injury time goals after Ingram had put us in the lead.
The home game with Chelsea I remember the BBC putting extra lighting on the floodlights for colour TV, I think they showed about a minute of the game on Match ot the Day.

Archie Gemmill nearly put North End 2-0 up after 70 minutes his shot crashing against the underside of the bar, leaving Bonetti helpless, but it bounced out to safety.
Just on 90 minutes, Osgood and Webb combined for the Chelsea equaliser which just squeezed inside the post. With the clock showing 93 minutes Birchenhall shot, which although Kelly was beat was going wide, before Cooke dived in and deflected the ball into the net for the winner.

North End beating Bristol City 4-2 at Deepdale 1971/72 season 2-1 down with less than ten minutes to go, think Clive Clark scored the last two

This was 15th Jan 1972, Lyall,Ingram and Clark x 2 won the game for North End infront of 13,619, in the next round we drew Man Utd, the last time North End played them in a competetive game.
A crowd of 37,052 packed into Deepdale only to see Utd win 2-0.

Not much changes. I saw a cup game only two weeks ago where that very same thing happened!
