1998/1999 ish ?
I remember that massive Poplar Tree outside the Offices on Lowthorpe Road. It was there long after the Invincibles Pavilion was built, then someone ( the Council / Corporation ? ) - hacked the Crown by half....then the following season or so - it was chopped down.

Actually, that tree was the very, very last 'object' that can be related to the old ground, and all the players and officials and thousands of fans would have passed it by.

I don't know why it was even pruned, let alone felled - it didn't look like there was anything wrong with it. Now there's just a circular area of loose gravel chippings there 😐. A shame.

That looks like an aerial shot of our inter-departmental game in July 1989….

The famous night when I scored 3 goals in our 4-3 win..
Now for the coming Boxing Day, ( putting on a Hughie Green voice, )
" We want to hear this story Ladies and Gentlemen "

I hate it when someone in authority decides that a lovely old thing needs getting rid of. Being from Leyland we're pretty used to it though. So many old buildings have been replaced by shite.

I only just found out that there is a circle of grass where the Maine Road centre spot was in Manchester right in the middle of the new development that was built there. Bit off topic but there you go.

Great photo. What a team that was. I’ll never forget walking off the Kop crying my eyes out after the lashers relegated us to the 3rd tier for the first time in April 1970, I thought my world had ended. Best night ever when we beat Rotherham 3-0 to secure the title and bounce straight back up. Happy days!

You forgot to mention that Shitpool made an immediate return too. 😄😄

Its still on google street view if viewed from the town end side (which for some reason has an older view) Viewed towards the kop side on street view its gone. It was massive. Must have been old.

There used to be several around the Town - The most obvious is in the church grounds between the road of - yes- Church Street and the building itself - still there , on the highway along St. Georges near the mini r-bout with St.Pauls Road - still there , and another on the corner of Meadow St. & Deepdale Road, just inside the small park there. Felled about four years or so ago .
There's many varieties of Poplar - these are/were examples of Populus nigra var betulifolia (' Black Poplar ') - also known as the "Manchester ( or Railway ) Poplar" being as how it used to be commonly planted in the North-West in general. It's getting rarer & needs to be planted in suitable places much more frequently. Basically where it's got room to spread it's massive crown , which can grow over 120 ft high.

3 days earlier than Rotherham game went to Fulham where we won 1 nil thanks to Ricky Heppolette goal. The Fulham programme had a picture of the trophy they thought they would win but sadly(not)they didn’t.
Ricky’s mum and dad were on the supporters club coach with us and were treated like heroes.
When we beat Rotherham their goalie was Roy Tunks who later came to play for us.

Spavin. Never forgotten that night. And his photo taken by the LEP in the Home Dressing Room after .. not with Champagne but a bottle of full cream Gold top !

The trophy was even waiting for them....to be presented to them by their then Chairman - Mr. Tommy Trinder, the famous Comedian - with his ( all the stage comedians of that time had them in that era ) catchphrase " You lucky people ! "

Indeed, the PNE Players and staff that afternoon truly were - " You lucky people! "

This was posted on Facebook, Port Vale in January 1986 during the re election season. Possibly the coldest I’ve ever been at a game but we did win one nil - which was a huge achievement for that season. Snowballs were thrown at the Port Vale keeper but because there used to be a big gap between the terraces and the pitch, very few reached!

I think it was just before Booth resigned as manager.
