Referee watch

Referee watch

Is that really what happened? Did the ref see none of 2 (some say 3) hits from Morsy - nor Browne's pretty tame reaction? Yeah... no fault from the ref then!

I don't put much blame on Browne. Sure, he shouldn't have done what he did... but that was quite some provocation. It's not like he has a big history for this sort of reaction - and is probably indicative of stress and unhappiness in the camp.
The ball was nowhere near the incident, how exactly are you expecting the referee to see it? If the 4th official tells him he saw Browne kick out then he has absolutely no choice. Unfortunate that the 4th only saw that one incident but that’s the way things go sometimes.

Rather that than VAR.

Can that happen when one of the match officials supposedly saw the incident ?

They always talk about the ref, don’t they? So it’s a good question that I don’t know the answer to - BUT - the lino saw Browne react - but evidently didn’t see what Morsy did.
It’s possible the ref’s report says the Lino (thinks he) watched the whole incident - and just got it wrong. That would be a really bad error - not one I’d expect- hence why I expected a retrospective red.

Agreed. I saw more of the incident later and I hadn’t realised at first that the ref was going off his earpiece. Indeed, as evidenced by my post a minute ago, until now I assumed it was the Assistant on the line.

There’s too much favouring the perceived ‘larger’ club. Because the ultimate ambition of all these refs is to be in Premier league and their own route to promotion.
Hecky is absolutely bang on to call out the inconsistencies. Put these guys on notice- you are in watch and it will not be tolerated.

For the record there should be a panel of referees managing all league divisions. The higher divisions might be faster than lower - but to have a seperate panel of elite referees is always going to cause this inconsistency in officiating. You never know it might raise ‘all boats’ by giving referees exposure to all aspects of the game.
Where it leaves VAR I have no idea, but one suspects CAR should be across all divisions or nine of them. Again another inconsistency in our ‘beautiful gane’

The bigger question is why a footballer is allowed to cheat the way he did and receive no punishment!

The officiating team should have spotted it and should have had a consequence but it was an error. The goalscorer’s act was intentional.

The referee who failed to spot Bristol City's handball last Saturday, has tonight disallowed a Burnley goal for a push when there wasn't one. Another shocking decison.

How is he allowed to referee so soon after a really bad decison?

That was really bad.

Even the West Brom player didn't appeal.

Atrocious decision.

Surely retrospective action should be taken against a blatant cheat.

I have a mate who sits behind our benches in the Invincibles. He said on Saturday that Ched had watched the handball on his little ipad within about 30 seconds of the Bristol City goal being scored. Our bench were then fuming and the 4th official knew all about it. I guess as we have no VAR there is no way for him to intervene, but you wonder if he even let the ref know or do they save it for after the game. Either way it should have been reported somehow.

I like the idea of having 2 appeals per game for things like that to be looked at. If your appeal is judged to be fair then you don't lose the appeal.

No doubt Lib that the foUrth would have informed him the time and discussed at the interval, if the referee has claimed not to have seen anything then that's it as far as the decision is concerned, wrong that it was.

Tom Nield is actually the fourth official at Leeds this weekend.
Wenesday's official Lewis Smith has the Sheffield derby!

Even if SKY had been there & broadcast it live to the rest of the UK - it wouldn't have changed anyone's decision to let the goal stand. It's only VAR & even if that system was being employed, their decision has to be made within so-many-minutes & not after the ninety etc .......(surely?)

BTW at least one of our player was booked for protesting- has that now been recinded?

Hey Noel. If a defender gets a yellow for fouling or handling, leading to a penalty and VAR then determines that there was no infringement, then the yellow card can be rescinded immediately. Quite right too!

But that is not the case for yellows for dissent… because although VAR may show that the ref made the wrong decision, the offence of dissent has still been committed. The same idea would apply to retrospective action after the match. Mads (I think) still committed the dissent. The fact that the ref had got it wrong makes no difference. But anyway, retrospective decisions after a match cannot ever rescind yellow cards. Only red cards are eligible to be reviewed.

in a similar vein, there was a case of a 16 year old lad scoring a crucial goal about two or three weeks ago. He celebrated by taking off his shirt. VAR then found that he had been just offside. So the lad had a double disappointment – the goal was disallowed, but his yellow card had to stand. It is a mandatory yellow card if you take off your shirt whether or not a goal has been scored.

Referee's are getting worse since Howard Webb took over. Maybe he should stop the self promotion on Mic'd up and concentrate on improving the standard of officials in England.

Is it any wonder they are poor when you watch these programs or listen to ex refs talking about decisions. They just back up 99% of them with same random rule then the following week the same thing happens with a different referee decision and they back him as well due to something else
