Then who plays at wing back?

Indeed - the point I have made previously is that with the partial exception of Small who is at least a wide midfielder though one who is much more effective on the left we simply do not have anyone who can play right wing-back available at the moment. It seems unlikely that either Valentin or Potts will be fit this side of the international break and there is no indication of when they might be after it. Brady if fit could play there and as an attacker I think he would be more effective than Small because cutting back to cross with his left foot as Small almost invariably does he would actually deliver a better quality cross. Offiah can certainly fulfil the defensive requirements of the role but is fitful to say the least as an attacker though curiously I think he could make a very dangerous overlapping rightback in a back four. Otherwise anyone we play there will be an improvisation - maybe Thordarson could be given a go if need be.

Brady will be lucky if he plays before Spring, let alone 4 days time!

As I said 'if fit' which does seem a distant prospect. Frankly I wonder if we will ever see him in a PNE shirt again. Pretty much the same is the case for Keane. I wonder if we can find a way to pay them off in January. Of the longterm absentees the one whose return might actually be of some use is Potts.

Vukcevic being available would be a massive boost, otherwise I think we'll be flogging the available back 5 for 90 minutes + injury time, assuming they don't get injured themselves.

In absolute desperation, I could see Devine playing as a makeshift wingback to see out a game, but he struggles to last 80 minutes himself.

Big test against a team that creates a lot of chances.

My absolute desperation RWB would be Armstrong

Devine is pretty comfortable out wide. Helped out Small when he was getting destroyed by Millar and Giles. His goal against Leicester was down the right wing, and his assist against Charlton was down the left.

Worst case scenario, but I think he's our most versatile midfielder.

The question was simply for this game specifically. As it's in this thread about the team for the game against Southampton, as you said about playing Offiah at RCB and Storey in the middle.

Didn't need all of that about players who are out injured.

That is a rather pedantic point and I didn't advocate playing Offiah on the right of the defence and Storey in the centre I simply pointed out that was the alternative to playing in Gibson's presumed absence Storey and Lindsay in those positions. As it is presuming neither Gibson nor Gibson be available will then I would expect Lindsay to continue.

But if somehow Vukcevic is fit and there seems to be a glimmer of a chance he might be then PH will have to make a decision between five players Storey, Lindsay, Offiah, Small and Vukcevic for the four places of right and centre of the defence and right and left of the midfield. I have no idea what choices he might make in that circumstance nor am I going to guess - I don't think I have ever yet successfully predicted a PNE line-up.

Lindsay is fine in a dogfight, very strong in the air and a good last ditch defender, blocks etc.

But obviously he has a massive massive weakness on the turn against fast players. Everyone knows it and it makes the entire team vulnerable.

Not championship standard by any stretch.
Not Championship player ? If I had 172 Championship appearances, I’d think I was a serious Championship player.

Liam Lindsay is garbage.

The whole team has carried him for the last 4 years.

Good for winning headers. And not much else.
Yes because Liam Lindsay is the only reason why we never challenge for the play offs.

He has some good games and some bad games. Like most of our players. That’s why they play for Preston.

We retained Ledson for 7 years and he ended up back in L1 in the prime of his career. Lindsay will have been here about 6 years when his contract expires, you reckon another Championship club will snap him up?

Would Potts, Brady, Keane, Thompson, and Cornell get a Championship contract anywhere else at this stage of their career? 12 games in and not one has contributed to our season.

Extending the contracts of average-to-poor Championship players is definitely part of the reason we don't trouble the play-offs. Lindsay has been poor for most of his PNE career.

It's literally a conversation about what to do in Gibson's absence as that's what you replied to, and you said an alternative could be to play Storey in the middle and Offiah at RCB, so I was just asking who'd you play at wing back then given that alternative?

Can anyone remember the circumstances of the Vukcevic substation?
I know it was five minutes after making the third goal but I can’t remember if he signalled to come off or went down injured.

Totally agree. I think he’s past his prime and he won’t get a better club after us. I just sometimes think people go a bit over the top with his criticism of him at times which is why I responded to the post I did.

He is an average player who has had some poor games for us but also some good ones. The first half of the 22/23 season he was very good. However we do need better if we want to progress as a club hence the signing of gibson.
