Team v Will Still’s (?) Saints

How can you say Thompson is just cover. We’ve never seen him. Just like Pol and Vuck were discounted before they’d kicked a ball. We’ve never had this good a squad for ages imo.

My point wasn’t that he’s solely wing back cover, rather that he’s an option if needed to cover. He was even sold that way to us when we signed him.

And right now, if he was fit, that’s how he would be deployed. He might be decent but given he’d be needing to push one of Whiteman or Armstrong out the side and us being desperately thin for cover out wide, I’ve no doubt he’d be slotting in at LWB.

I made a point earlier in the thread that if we played with a back 5 tomorrow we would not have any defensive cover on the bench…hopefully we do now.
Will be good to have another body in.
Hope his fitness level is reasonable
Shame we are getting these injuries in what has started as a better than expected season.

Well as good as Lewis has been in his career, he’s been blighted by injuries in recent years. Another one to add to the physio room in a few weeks I reckon.

Erm, because he’s a defensive midfielder and not a LWB?

We will certainly miss Vuks crosses, we havnt seen stuff like that for years.

He has put in some terrific crosses in recent games culminating in Jebbos fantastic goal against Sheffield United.

Really good for a taxi driver …😂

Jamal Lewis is about as good as it gets in what is ultimately now a really poor market.

Natural athlete with bags of experience at this level despite still being mid to late twenties.

Concerns are him not having any game time of late and his loan at Watford recently, he was singled out as a particularly poor performer.

But, this is real dire straits. Vuk is a proper kick in the stones injury and coming back won’t be plain sailing given his game relies on acceleration and the nature of the injury. Typically our long term absentees are all wing back cover in Potts, Brady and even Thompson.

As was Jebbo. Always hard to tell with them lot..proper basket case club.

But your right, his career has not gone smoothly in recent years. Highly regarded at one stage though.

Even if it's just someone to bring on when Small or Offiah are exhausted to try and prevent further injury, it has to be worth it. Sadly, it must mean we're not expecting anyone back imminently.

Yeah, totally agree on both points.

On the latter, this is definitely the case. You look at Small now he already looks knackered, if we flog him to death and he keeps going on international duty, it's only a matter of time.

Apologies for going off track but what a blow for NI losing McCann and Charles.
With the amount of times we’ve been screwed by either injuries or fatigue as a result of McCann going on international duty and being run into the ground, it’s nice to be able to reciprocate for a change

Small is clearly already in the ‘red zone’ which is why we had to flog Vuckevic last week. If we are not careful, this system combined with the number of games will break them all.

Offiah should be OK as an athlete and has plenty in the tank. Shame he isn’t a wing back though. Hopefully Pol back after the break.

At some point the system is going to have to change. We don’t have the necessary players for the demands of the back 5. Pol/Andy/Small are obviously brilliant wingbacks but they don’t have the athleticism to be run into the ground week in week out playing such a demanding role, and that’s why two of them have already picked up long term muscle injuries

We’re a Hughes injury away from absolute disaster stations

So currently we have Brady, Thompson, Vukcevic, Pol, Potts, McCann and Gibson out injured which is really far from ideal at this stage of the season where games are going to start coming thick and fast.

The addition of Jamal Lewis is fine but it will surely take him 3 or 4 weeks to get up to match fitness. That will leave us with Offiah, Storey, Hughes, Lindsay and Small to cover 5 positions in the team for the next 3 games minimum.
