Summer 2026 - Transfer Rumours and Discussions.

I would rather a decent sized LB that couple could fill in at LCB if required as I don't want Lindsay near a north end team again. Get us a mobile commanding RCB to partner Gibson with Offiah and Clarke as RB options and left back comp for Vuk that could also offer cover for Gibson. Get shit of Lindsay and Pol. Storey and Hughes used as needs must cover.

If we’re being serious we should still be in for Drameh

Clarke gets injured , great cover , could also rotate with Vukcevic who’s minutes need managing

We need multiple permutations

Don’t want to see Pol anywhere near RB ever again
We don’t have unlimited budget tho and I’d say there’s much bigger areas for concern than RB now we have Clarke

Quite simply, for a side who can play fairly direct, we’ve been awful at set pieces for years.
Up until last week, it was all Ben Whiteman’s fault!

Getting desperate if you're having to take a Time Machine back to 2019 to attempt to make a wanky point.
You’re completely misunderstanding, unsurprisingly.

The time it happened isn’t what’s important. It’s the actual thing happening. If it’s ’pissing around with it’ when it doesn’t work, why wasn’t it ‘pissing around with it’ when it did?

FWIW, yeah, I wouldn’t have done it yesterday, because it was further out. But micro analysing to the point where we are talking about a free kick 25+ yards out hitting the wall (as if this doesn’t happen frequently regardless) isn’t fruitful.

Can play either side apparently

Yes but primarily a right footed right back, so whilst maybe useful to have sometimes it's not what we need as a solution to our left back issue.

Would be incredibly surprised if we're still interested after signing Clarke. Sounds like we went after Drameh but then Clarke became available so we moved quickly to get him done.

Edit: apologies for beating a dead horse. Didn't see the previous replies to the question.

Being clinical in both boxes is what makes the difference in this league.

It was a great opportunity to either get the ball into the box or for Devine to get a shot off.

It was poorly executed as we gave Bolton the time to get out and block the shot.

We are never going to score from every free kick at any level but just to discount it because it doesn't suit your narrative is a nonsense.

How many times last season did we have a corner of a set piece and then get counter attacked on and either conceede or give away a big opportunity.

It is clearly an area of our game we need to improve on.

If Hecky doesn’t think we need defensive signings then I’d sack him tomorrow. It’s to everyone that Lindsay and Storey is a shambolic pairing, even by league one standards. Pol had one of the worst individual performances ive seen for us. Weak as piss, completely unable to defend 1v1, and zero composure to run into space. He’s got a ridiculously athletic player in Offiah who’s crying out for a long run in one position. Beggars belief as to what he was thinking. Hopefully that’s the last we ever see of Thompson too, I’ve never seen such a one footed player in my life. Plus Heckys comments about not considering any changes at half and how we need more attackers to be able to play the way we want. In my opinion he’s wildly incorrect, without a good base we will get nowhere this year.
Agree 100%

It was poorly executed, yes, but as I said, we can’t extrapolate that into a blanket statement that our set pieces were poor because of one poor free kick.

I’m not discounting the fact it was a poor FK. I asked the question (to which you still haven’t responded) - if it was ‘pissing around’ yesterday, why wasn’t it against Boro / Wigan? Did the exact same thing, the difference being Gally didn’t hit the wall.

It is clearly an area of our game we need to improve on.
Completely agree with you. But, having read this for a while, I would have thought the general consensus would be that we’ll be a huge threat from every set piece now ‘Ben Whiteman’s floaters to the back post’ are no longer.

It is clearly not isolated to that one free kick alone and has been an issue for a number of years.

You went back years to find examples of when we had one of the best dead ball specialists we had in recent history. There will be many hundreds that back up my argument.

You love Ben Whiteman and do not share the general consensus of most supporters that his floaty corners usually led to fook all.

Again, I agree, but the original comment to which I responded was referring to yesterday’s match, not the last few years.

So you acknowledge that one poor free kick was down to the taker, as opposed to the fact he set it first to work the angle. We’re getting somewhere.

I don’t, so you’re telling fibs. I often found myself defending him because he’s a decent champ midfielder, though with clear limitations. It goes without saying Leroy, from 30 minutes, looks an upgrade.
