Simpson was shocking. Was successful initially on the back of Davies' work ethics still ingrained in the squad. Simpson didn't like this and tried to change things. It was a disgrace not finishing in the play offs that season. Then the rot continued until Irvine came in.
The turning point for Simpson was when Derby were top, we were second and CB said on SSN that BD had 2 teams in the top 2. Simpson lost the plot and the rest is history. That said, he'd of been found out sooner or later.

Simpson coincided with an incredible uplift in north end fortunes if I recall, top of the table at Christmas maybe bullishit but is my memory plus this

Instagram These Football Times on Instagram: "It’s January 2007. Preston North End are drawing 0-0 against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup fourth round. The teams had just come out for the second half, and many supporters hadn’t yet taken their seats when David Nugent decides the game needs a goal. No need for teammates or anything. Don’t be daft. Dave can manage this solo."

It turned out to be shite but we were literally going up off the back of this. Were fucking miles off where this is.

Let show some positivity !
I am more confident than I have been for many years on this appointment.
Because of all the negativity on the forum & also I came to the conclusion that most posters on here haven’t a flipping clue about picking a manager or buying players or running a football club.
That’s just my opinion & also the reason i think he will be a legend & in the top 3 managers in my live time of 65 + years of been a Nobber
Well said

I remember winning at Leicester. Sure Nash or someone mentioned about the Billy Davies effect still helping the squad. Couple of games later we went top drawing at home to Coventry and that was the end of November.

After the Leicester game our form dropped and we had a run of won 12, drew 2 and lost 14. We really shouldn't have finished outside the top 6 after how well we started. Binning off Dichio and playing Ricketts didn't help.

Dichio up top wasnt scoring goals but was vital for the set up and mean those around him played better. After those comments he started ageymang with nugent instead. Who wasn't as good a team player, and also a good impact sub so weakened us in multiple ways.

The Jan transfer window with Danny Murphy rumoured and then Pavel Pergl(rip), sefo soley and Michael rickets delivered

Would be interesting to hear what the view is now on John
Beck. A marmite one and I hated that time for the style of play. Also we didn’t progress from a low base. However I’m sure there’ll be fans who’ll say he shook the club up, got the Town End rocking, had some trainin, to Stock[og methods ahead of his time and brought in some good characters eg Gary Peters.
Personally and it's my opinion.
Beck is right down there with Westley in my supporting time since Easter Monday 1963.
Discounting the Managers of the nightmare times when we had no money and looked like we could go out of Business if a consortium of around a dozen local businessmen hadn't put £10,000 (?) each in, Beck was an awful Manager.

Purely from the Footballing side he seems to get more recognition than he is due because he galvanised and did some really good work off the field (kudos for that).

He took a Team that was 'going nowhere' under Les Chapman but was in mid table obscurity - and got it relegated.
He even sold our best defender (Mike Flynn) on deadline day because he was 'too small' to Stockport. Great decision that!

But then couldn't get us back up.
Awful Manager, awful Football although i suppose his 'record' won't look too bad because we where only in Division 4 and scaped enough together to get into the Play offs.

Yeah I just checked Parry and Šumulikoski came just 1 day apart, cost £800.000 just for both of them, that was a total waste of money.
That is the problem with how the club has been run under the Hemings tenure, managers have had to find hidden gems by taking punts on players hoping. For every Nugent, DJ you end up with more rubbish that doesn’t work out and which eats up the budget.

Selling Flynn on deadline day (or at all) was one of the worst decisions we’ve ever made.

It was his sacking and then his cunt of a dad cancelling the loans and telling Pulis to do the same. He was a fucking abysmal manager and we'd have 100% gone down.
Fair enough. I still rate him above brown though. Keeping us up wasn't an impossible task and we were utterly abject under Brown. We had a better chance with Fergie Jr and keeping the loan players than we did with Brown in hindsight.

We were 5 points adrift with a game in hand when we took over and finished 6 points adrift.

Obviously he'll get good will from the fans like know other...I just hope the players buy into him & not just think of him as a lower league manager who has been sacked by the likes of mk dons comin into a squad who perhaps think they're elite level championship players &/or know that perhaps he wasn't first choice (that's the cynical side of me)

In regards to the LEP article about playing exciting football & making the opposition defend more, pressing etc i just hope that isn't the
Paul Heckingbottom "I don't want to be stood bored on the touchline"
Or
The Thomas Tuchel "In previous tournaments England seemed reactive rather than proactive"
I live in hope 🙏
It’s called “Bullshitting” in common parlance around here.

I missed off from my post, that sacking Les Chapman, because 'we where going nowhere' - wasn't MEANT to be downwards!
Took over a team of relative midgets and got them playing whack it as far as you can from wherever you stand, football!!
Absolute bilge.
His to be acknowledged good work off the field seems to cloud some judgements as to the actual footballing side. JMO.
And to anyone post Beck era - if you think we have played 'hoofball' under some of our more recent Managers, then you ain't seen anything like the Beck era!
Even Danny Bergera of Stockport County total longball up to 6'8" Kevin francis and his 6'4" sidekick said -
'course we know ow they play' in his south american accent (or whatever).
The total indignity of that!!!
shudder.

I have a hunch that Graham Alexander will be revered as much as David Moyes and Billy Davies in a years or so time.
The ‘workmanlike ‘ managers were Grayson and Irvine.
The ‘could talk a good game but we’re all mouth and no trousers brigade’ = Lowe, Heckingbottom, Simpson
The 100% useless and (dare I say it) fraudulent types - were Beck, westley, fergusson , Brown.

Looking back the managerial selection committee chose some shockers and were completely hoodwinked in some cases…
